VERY ODD issue I am having with Samsung LN750A and PS3

Aug 1, 2009 1:16PM PDT

I am going to post an issue I have been battling for months now in the hope that perhaps someone here might have an idea.

We have-
Samsung LN750 52" HDTV
Pioneer 1019 AVR
Sony PS3
ATT Uverse Box
Polk Speakers

We connect them like so-
Uverse>Component>HDTV (Att told us some have had issue with just HDMI)
Uverse>Optical>1019
PS3>HDMI>AVR>HDMI>TV

The extremely odd issue we have been having is that about every 3 - 4 times we use the PS3 to play a game our HDTV will turn off for a moment, and then turn back on, and then all is fine. In addition, when this happens we lose ALL sound from our home theater speakers as well, till the TV comes back on.

We have-
Replaced all the HDMI cables.
Bought a new PS3.
Bought a new AVR (Pioneer 1019)
Just recently tried plugging the TV into a different outlet (we were getting excited for a bit, b/c it didn't happen in 4 times that we tried, but unfortunatly it just did)

We have been working with Samsung all along thinking it was the TV, although even their techs have been at somewhat of a loss so far. (Though they do want to replace the mainboard) If it were the TV though I don't understand why I would lose sound from home theater system.

If anyone here could provide any assistance we would be very grateful.

Thank you.

I did not see any way to edit my original post so I am adding more info here.

Apparently you do lose sound when the TV is turned off. I don't understand why, but I just had the PS3 running, "I" turned the TV off, and the sound crackled a bit, and then went off for about 10 seconds, and then came back on. Ai ya. Why would the AVR lose sound just because I turn off the TV? I would have thought all one would lose is the picture.

Us,

How is your audio sent to the receiver? Is it through HDMI and output by the TV's optical to the receivers optical input, or through optical from the PS3 directly to the receiver (thereby bypassing the receiver altogether)?

You'd lose sound if you were ported through the television, but if the PS3 is directly hooked up to the receiver, you may lose sound as part of the HDCP (copy protection) that both the PS3 and TV must have.

I'm confused why it would just turn off, but if you've replaced everything else, it may be the television. The only other thing I can think of would be the HDMI cable. Did you test it with other HDMIv.1.3 compliant cables? I saw that you did, but was wondering if it was the same brand or if you expirimented a little.

ODD Problem With Samsung LN750a & Sony PS3
Aug 3, 2009 6:54PM PDT

HD_Tech,

Our setup is as follows-

AT&T Uverse Box to Samsung TV via Component
Uverse Box to Receiver via Optical (for when we want sound from all speakers and not just TV)
PS3 connects to the Receiver via HDMI
Receiver to Samsung TV via HDMI

The TV only shuts off when we use the PS3 (about once every 4 times we use it, sometimes sooner) It will shut off, and then power back on.

The original HDMI cables we used were GE brand.
We are currently using Phillips 1.3a HDMI cables.

We find it very odd though that this only happens when we use the PS3.
We do know about the power cycling issue that Samsung does have with this TV... and it may well be the case with us that we are having some variation on that as well. However, I would think we should experience it whenever, yet again, it only happens when we use our PS3.

We have been battling this issue for 2 months now. It has really been very, very frustrating.

ODD Problem With Samsung LN750a & Sony PS3

Us,

Have you installed the latest firmware for the television?

If so, or if that doesn't work, I might suggest calling service and having your unit inspected. I find it odd, like you, that it only happens with the game console.

Ln750A ODD Problem

Tech,

Yes, we have the 1012.2 firmware installed. However, there seems to be some confusion with Samsung and their techs as to which is the actual latest firmware version for our TV.

If I go to the Samsung website it shows 1012.2 as the latest. However, people on the AVS forums have found new units running 1013.0 firmware. I think some even said when they called into Samsung they were sent a thumb drive with 1013 on it.

When I spoke to Samsung support they told me they only see 1012.2 available. The tech who called us first though said he saw 1013.0

We have been in contact with Samsung support for some time on this issue. Their latest idea is to open up our new TV and put a new mainboard in it. However, we have had this ticket in since last Friday and as of right now, have not been contacted back by anyone.
