Question

[SOLVED] Very bad internet connection after changing OS

Apr 11, 2018 9:47AM PDT

Hi,

A week ago I got a SSD to improve my PC. As I was running it with Windows 8.1 for a long time I wanted to upgrade to W10 so I installed it on my SSD and started using it. Everthing is going fine except one point : I used to have a good internet connection (VDSL2+, 40mb/s DL / 10mb/s UP) but I now only have 3-4mb/s DL but still 10 mb/s UP. I tried to look arround and change some things such as the DNS I use or disabled the P2P windows option, but nothing changed.

All the other devices on my internet connection are working fine, I did a speedtest on my brother's pc and he is getting the normal results i used to have.

Has anyone ever got this problem ? If yes how did you fix it.

I haven't changed anyting in my PC, I simply added an SSD, and changed my OS from W8 64bits to W10 64bits.

PC Specs (built myself):
i5-6600K @3.5GHz
RAM : 8go (DDR4)
SSD : Samsung 960 evo 250go
HDD : Segate Barracuda 1To
I'm connected to internet using a Plug that uses the electricity to be connected in Ethernet.

Thanks,

EDIT// SOLVED : After finding that the issue were my plugs, I swapped them and it worked again. Re pairing them wouldn't work so if you have the same problem keep that in mind. Although the connection isn't as good as a direct connection, it is still good.

Thanks to all the people that helped me Grin

Did you turn off W10's update sharing?

"I tried to look arround and change some things such as the DNS I use or disabled the P2P windows option"

At first I though this could be the source of my problem, but I have already turned it off, and it didn't change anyting  Cry .

Let me know if you have any other ideas.

Thanks,

Going to have to know more.

What is this comment about "I'm connected to internet using a Plug that uses the electricity to be connected in Ethernet."

That's unclear.

Re: plug

I think he means a powerline connection, in stead of WiFi or a Ethernet cable directly to the router.

If it is powerline

Then a test is required with a direct connection.

Test done

Hi,
I took my 20m long RJ45 cable and got something interesting : I did five speedtest with a direct connection and here are the results :

N° 1: DL 21.1 (mb/s) // UP 9.63 (mb/s) // ping : 10
N° 2: DL 11.6 (mb/s) // UP 9.42 (mb/s) // ping : 8
N° 3: DL 20.43 (mb/s) // UP 9.74 (mb/s) // ping : 6
N° 4: DL 63.30 (mb/s) // UP 9.85 (mb/s) // ping : 6
N° 5: DL 62.66 (mb/s) // UP 6.68 (mb/s) // ping : 7

As you can see, I got a wide range of results, but the last ones were very good.
So I was wondering, could my plugs for my powerline connection be incompatible with windows 10 ? They are quite old but I don't see why they would work on W8 ...

EDIT : I have waited a bit and after doing some more speedtest, the results are all arround 60DL // 10UP.

Never heard of such.

Usually it's just something gone bad with the link or devices. Try re"pairing" the set. Also, swap the end devices.

Way better results than before

I had already tried re"pairing" the set but it didn't work, but swapping the plugs worked, Indeed i have 25Mbps/Dl but I don't think I will be able to reach 60Mbps like when I was connected directly to the box as its a powerline connection.

So in a way you solved my problem.
Thanks

Glad it helped.

I like powerline links but once in a while you get to re-pair and the swapping of the end devices trick is used. Glad it paid off.

Answer
Sounds Like An Updated Driver Is Needed
Apr 11, 2018 9:57AM PDT

Windows 10 installs the network adapter driver that it thinks is right. It may not be the best for your computer. So.... visit the ethernet card/plug manufacturer's website (or maybe it's the motherboard manufacturer's website) and download/install the latest Windows 10 ethernet driver for your computer. It should help.

Hope this helps.

Already installed LAN drivers

Indeed, I have already done that as well, I dowloaded the drivers from my motherboard's website just after installing windows, as one of the first things.

Thanks anyway,

See above about W10 sharing.

Also be sure to install the chipset driver package as a bare minimum.

Re: PC of brother
Apr 11, 2018 10:53AM PDT

Is your brother using the same plug at the same location as you do, and he gets 30-40 Mbps and you get 3-4 Mbps? And if your PC is on his location?
And do you realise the difference between MBps (MegaByte) and Mbps (Megabit). That's a factor 8 to 10.

A clean install of Windows 10 isn't "simply" on a new hard disk isn't "simply", if you compare the results with an existing Windows 8.

Re: PC of brother

My brother has a laptop and consequently a Wifi Card whereas I'm using a powerline ethernet connection. In one of my answers on this post I did a test with a direct connection to my box, and the results were good (see up for the results). Also i do understand the difference between MBps & Mbps but this changes nothing as I have done all the test on the PCs on speedtest.net so the results are both in Mbps.

Also, i'm sorry but i didn't understand your last sentence.

Thanks,
