Answer
Here's my feeling here.

After a lot of working with many folk my thought and feeling is if you are using the stock apps you have left control of everything in someone's uncaring hands. Think it over. Why not install a contact and email app that YOU decide to backup or not?

It's clear that they didn't know that backups are still required for phones. Catches a lot of folk unaware. What can you do about it?

That is, while you can preach backup and salvation every Sunday, they don't backup until they get burned.

I can tell them their contacts/mail isn't lost, actually

Since they're using Gmail, all is not lost. It's still in the cloud, amigo.

I hear you loud and clear though about what needs to be done but isn't by many users. That, and a failure to bother looking through any sort of user manual <vbg>.

About that manual.

Most are joke books. I tried to use the supplied manual as source when we had issues with the phone but the service counter person snorted and laughed. I think the days where the manual mattered is gone as no counter seems to take it seriously.
