As to leaving content on other company servers, there's not much that can be done except to take it as a lesson about backing up what we can't lose.
Problem: transferring files, contacts, and emails to a gmail account. Trouble and no support. Make the transfer before canceling the account and keep contacting them until you get what you want. Sample of over 6 hours of wasted time trying to get this task done.

Anne (19:10:35): DSL I started the process of tranferring my account files to gmail.com over 6 weeks ago unsuccessfully. First verizon had technical problems in the DC area then I followed the steps online and it did not work and a message to contact Technical support came up. I contacted them and the person told me to give a call back number. No one called back. I tried again. Then again. And today over 1 1/2 hours with no help but I did talk with 11 people

Anne (19:23:49): No, it stated that you could transfer up to 60 days after the account was closed.
Sanjay(19:24:09): All the emails get lost as soon as the account is suspend.
Anne (19:24:38): I started trying to transfer right away when I notified them of the closing of the account--before it was closed.
Anne (19:25:19): I was able a month ago to get three days of emails transferred before an error message came up and stated to contact technical support.
Anne (19:25:51): I contacted them and was told to give a call back number--there was no call back.
Anne (19:26:33): I got the gmail account in January before the account closed in Feb.

Hope someone has a lead for taking care of this problem. The account is cancelled now. Online Verizon stated that you had 60 days to transfer account email info--now online support states No, this is not true. How convenient!
