Verizon DSL, DHCP error and no IP address

Feb 27, 2005 7:59PM PST

Good morning,

I'm trying to connect to the internet using Verizon DSL but am not able to. I called Verizon and they had me do "run" and then "winipcfg". When that screen comes up, she had me "release all" and then "refresh all" (I think), at any rate, there was no IP address so she said I needed to call Dell to get an IP adress. Anyone know of an faster, easier way to be able to connect to the internet using Verizon DSL? Something obviously is not configured right. I can't log on at all.

Did you set it up properly?
READ the directions that came with the modem.

As for obtaining an IP address, that has nothing to do with Dell. Calling them will do nothing.

I don't know what OS you have but your computer always has an IP address (if you have a NIC card that is). Once again a DSL provider rep is proud of their stupidity in telling you what they did.

Type Start / Run then "cmd" to get a DOS window. Then type 'ipconfig' and enter. This will show you the current IP address, mask and gateway.

Most people have a dynamic IP from their ISP so all you need to do is to enter the ISP's IP address, gateway and DNS that the ISP gives you. You enter this info in the Control Panel / Network Connections. Then select Local Area Connection, then select TCP/IP for your NIC card, then Properties. This has a General tab with radio buttons.

Keep calling Verizon until someone who knows more than a rock answers the phone. The setup package they gave you should work just fine if you follow the instructions and you have a dynamic IP (which is most likely).

I feel your pain, ISP customer service folks are mostly horrid that's why I NEVER use my local phone company for servie. I have DSL Extreme and they are very good, very good service and customer service too.
