relative. Advertised speeds are measured in laboratory conditions. To quote the auto industy, "Your average speed will vary". Did you see a guarantee on the ad?
i already know that....thats why i made this thread
because most advertisments are not credible, i want to know the acutal download speed that a user gets
one source told me 70 kbps, but im going to use it on a network of two computers
will this slow it down, if so, by how much?
Since speed is really relative. Speed depends on a ton of varibles. Your modem speed, your processor speed, your local hub (your ISP's), distance to the DSLAM or cable hub, time of day, net congestion, actual ATM speed between hops, upload speed of the site you're visiting, etc.
No one can give you an actual speed, and those in the know won't even try, including your ISP. If you'd like you can visit my site below and scroll down to the Broadband Reports speed test at the bottom of the page. It'll give you a snapshot of your speed.
The only way you can get a set and reliable speed is to go to a fully digital connection such as a T-1 or higher.

you people are treating me like im a moron....i know that it depends on system conditions, but from personal experience and discussions with other cable users it is indeed possilbe to give an estimate on a speed that you can expect
the ISP would be the last one to tell me the info im looking for, as they cant afford to garuntee anything
I dont even have the service yet, so i cant use your tool for the reports thing
what would be the speed of downloading the average direct link download using a great computer with 1.5 GB ram and 3.4 ghz processor, and being directly connected to the modem with an ethernet cable, and being the only user on at a time (also can u give me a "quote" with two people online)...and the time of day is 4:00 PM EST and the net congestion is average, and any other factors u mentioned is average
I have verizon DSL. This morning, I was checking my email, my daughter was downloading a file, and my wife was on the net i ran the Bandwith test on this site to see just how slow it was. As you can see the bandwidth deteriorates quickly with more than one connection. 23.5K BANDWIDTH WHAT A JOKE.
Here are the results:
BANDWITH METER
Bandwidth calculation is measured against that of CNET's Internet Services. Bandwidth may be higher or lower depending on Internet congestion. Calculated tests do not reflect server reliability and speed.
Connection Type DSL
Connection Speed
23.5 Kbps - You 23.5 kbps
Faster Providers
Aplus.Net 28.8 Kbps Dial-up 28.8k
Intergate 33.6 Kbps Dial-up 33.6k
ISP.COM 53.3 Kbps Dial-up 56k
Covad 384.0 Kbps DSL/Cable 384k
Find ISP 768.0 Kbps DSL/Cable 768k
Comcast 1500.0 Kbps Cable/DSL1.5Mbps
thats pretty bad....
but if im the only one using the connection that would mean i would have a connection of about 70 kbps, which is not bad. Anyways, i only have to share the connection with on other person, and the other guy doesnt do much downloading, just surfs the internt, so i shouldnt be too bad off.
By the way, hows the experience? Do web sites load instantly? Can you stream video from google videos? Is it fast when theres no network congetsion?
