Support costs.

Just because the Treo 600/650 BT is there doesn't mean they have to support you in your endeavors to use it for free. The issue came up and they decided in some comittee (i bet) that:

a. It could interfere with the cell phone.
b. Support could be costly. Most users will complain when they have to pay for support of non-company equipment.
c. Disabling it will give the owner more battery time.
d. BT can be a security risk, so disable it from the gitgo.

The list may be longer than this.

Crippled bluetooth in Moto phone
Aug 24, 2005 12:38PM PDT

In some Verizon phones such as the Morotola V710, they ''cripple'' the bluetooth functions. The bluetooth does work for headset use and a few other things (still can't get a straight answer on all this) but they've disabled any file transfer ability, etc. This requires the owner to use their ''get it now'' service for ringtones (instead of downloading them from a computer) or their picture upload service (instead of simply downloading the photos you take via bluetooth, you'd have to upload the photos to verizon's site at a cost of 25 cents per picture - ouch!).

Anyway, depending on the model, you may be able to purchase a data cable and accomplish the same tasks and with the limited functionality of bluetooth, it may be enough for your needs. Despite these shortcomings, I personally am considering the V710 at the top of my short list for a phone upgrade which I'm eligible for in a month.

also in the LG VX8100
Aug 24, 2005 3:16PM PDT

In case you're wondering, the LG VX8100 also has the broken bluetooth. If that tells you anything, Verizon Wireless only wants the bluetooth to work for just the headset. With that in mind, I don't see Nokia introducing a bluetooth phone for Verizon Wireless since they don't like complying with Verizon's criteria. Nokia did introduce a bluetooth phone for Alltel. I wonder if Samsung will introduce a bluetooth phone for Verizon Wireless. We all know it'll have the broken bluetooth if one is introduced.
