It can be confusing because the name's are similar, however W-CDMA has almost nothing to do with CDMA2000 (1xrtt) Verizon's 3G technology is EVDO already deployed in several test markets and soon available nationwide, from there, probably the next update will be Rev A.

And you should be greatful! EVDO is a much faster data-speed path than UMTS/HSPDA which averages 150ishk per sec, EVDO averages 4-600k and bursts up to 2mbs.

W-CDMA is a different spectrum spread and will predominantly be used as a 3g path by GSM providers such as Cingular and T-Mobile (although they've admitted their 3g path won't likely be started until mid-next year).
