I'm looking for a program to convert jpeg/bitmaps/gifs to vector files, is there a cheap(free) one available?
Thanks, Woody

Since "vector" isn't defined, I'll write that your question needs some refinement.

But a crude method was to install a PEN PLOTTER printer driver and print it to a file. The resulting file contained lines to be drawn by the plotter, but could be called VECTORS.

Tell more about what you wanted.

I want to convert jpeg/bitmaps/gif files into files that are compatible with Corel Draw & Adobe Illustrator. Color separated files.

My Corel Draw loads jpegs and others just fine. In fact, way back to Corel Version 3.0 was a feature to convert bitmap or raster images to line drawings.

It appears you have the capability already. The color seperations is usually done later in prepress prep, but if I recall you can do that in today's Corel at anytime.

I guess my post was confusing. I need a program that is compatible with Illustrator & Draw. I don't have either. Someone on another site recommended Paint Shop Pro?

Can you clear it up?

Corel Draw does jpegs and such and has some line convertors too. Save as .EPS and such that the Adobe sofware can use.

I have paintshop pro, let me see... .AI, .EPS and .PS so that may do as well.

May I write that your post is rather lacking in depth and didn't describe what it is that you need to do?

Before you spend one dime, take a moemnt and try IRFANVIEW and see if it wil convert the image for you.

I have downloaded irfanview & it doesn't seem(so far) to do what I want. All I need is to convert jpeg/bmp/gif files to eps files or anything compatible.I'm not sure what file extensions are applicable to Draw or Illustrator(I have neither program)

Can you be clear!

Coral Draw opens JPEG and more already. It also can save to .EPS and more.

Your posts are leaving out very important words so this makes us dance in circles asking what or why you can't do what you want.

I know what files Draw and Illustrator open!! I don't have either program!!! I posted to find a program that didn't cost $400 just to convert jpegs to eps files. Is that clear enough.

Wish you had stated that from the top. Here's the methods..

1. The GIMP.

Sorry for the cached link. This article notes using THE GIMP to save in .EPS.

2. The printer driver.

From about 1990 with Windows 2 I have been able to install a Postscript printer driver, but direct EPS (I won't bother to define EPS in this conversation) output to a file which I have opened in Illustrator.

Given both methods cost zero dollars, I suggest you try such.
