File ''extensions''!

1. First things first -- from Explorer/My Computer, click View, Folder Options, View and place a dot in the radio button for Show all files. If a check mark exist in the box for Hide file extension for known file types, remove it. Click the box near the top of the applet labeled Like Current Folder, click Apply, and then click OK to Exit.

Note: Have you ever noticed when you view the Registered file types: (Explorer, View, Folders Options, File Types) there may be several, if not many with exact names but the "File types details" reflecting different extensions - then, there are others which reflect two or more file type associations - then again, when you scroll down the window you find an extension listed twice, or more, with a different program? When you re-associate a singular file type to something else, all you loose is the direct capability of the former program opening that extension -- it still can. You do have the option of two separate programs (actions) being available for opening that extension, [Q133217]:

2. In Explorer or My Computer, find a file with an extension to change. Click the file once to bold/highlight. Right-click the file with focus (highlighted), to get the Open With: context menu and choose an action program. If the program wanted is not in the list, click the Browse button and find it. That program will be assigned to open that file type extension.

Warning: Make note of the dialog, Always Use This Program To Open This File Type and use it or not.
