VCR playback issues

Oct 27, 2009 6:37AM PDT

I have a 1998 RCA VCR (model VR645HF).

It is currently connected via coaxial cables and through a splitter to a TV, DVD recorder, and a cable box. It is also connected to a Playstation 2 via A/V cables.

I jostled the cables a while back. Since then, I can't play tapes. When the VCR is turned on, I can watch TV with slightly reduced quality and minor blips in the audio. I know the tapes are playing, but I cannot see or hear them. The menu screen is also not visible.

Here is what I have done to try to remedy the problem:
- Checked all cable connections
- Redid all cable connections
- Switched old coaxial cables out for new ones
- Tried all different channel combinations
- Attempted to connect the TV to the VCR via A/V cables
- Tried all different channel combinations via A/V cables

I have a backup VCR, but it's sometimes sensitive about accepting tapes and would require me rigging an RF modulator up to the splitter (for the PS2 - the DVD recorder and TV both only have one set of A/V hookups).

I'm wary about finding another used one because of potential macrovision problems.
