I've not tested it, something you will have to do with your own VBA extensively because there are always errors
But that's just one way, and there will be other methods.
The example shown below won't have the VBA indent formatting displayed in this post, because the forums don't allow more than one space between characters.

If Cells(x, 3) = "Fred" Then
Cells(x, 3) = "Barney"

Basically I have a work book which I would like to reformat cells containing certain words contained in a named list (called objective_rating), but I want to leave any cells not containing these words.
I have the bit of VBA that will format the cells in a range, but how can I select a discontinuous range?
