put card in slot closest to cpu, and remember to plug in pci card power?

wouldn't hurt to reset mobo to factory default while you are testing - you can reconfig it later

yeah i tried both slots and still nothing, and pluged in the 6 pin power cable. when the hd 5770 is plugged in my hard drive is making a ticking sound.the only way i the computer is working propely is when im using the 4870?

That's a monstrous amount of power.

The ticking is not a good sign. Have them check out your PC again for shorts on the backside to the case?

but it only makes it when the hd 5770 is plugged in. but works perfectly fine on my old asus m2n mx se plus mobo

So did you try it without a case?

Let's not spend 20 posts about a common issue. It's a common problem where you plug in a card and your board shorts out on the back side. It may upset you but let's do the work.

i cant see that there are any compatibility issues with using a hd 5770 on a ga-m59sli-s5 mobo. not making sense why it wont work :/

I think it's hardware related...try the following
Aug 14, 2013 2:15AM PDT

Update the BIOS of the mobo. I think it's hardware since it's failing before any software comes into play, gets loaded. The only thing that isn't hardware that could help would be a BIOS update to the motherboard.

Hope this helps Grin
