Question

Valid IP, can't browse internet

Jun 27, 2015 5:10PM PDT

I'm completely stumped on this issue, and I can't find any help specific to this on the internet.
My girlfriend's computer can't browse the internet. It HAS internet, it just can't use it. The only time it ever works, is after a restart. Then after a few hours of usage, it will stop working. Naturally, restarting the computer every few hours is an undesirable solution. It is a very minimalist computer, with very few programs outside of iTunes, Comodo, and Avast, and Chrome has no extensions.
I've tried disabling the antivirus and firewall, ipconfig/release and renew, double checking to make sure no proxy server had magically appeared, and reinstalling the appropriate driver in device manager. I've opened task manager and made sure there's nothing suspicious or unnecessary running in the background.
The weird thing is, she still has a valid ip. It's a normal 192 ip that you'd expect from a router, and she can successfully ping out to google. My computer is connected to the same network, and I'm browsing fine, and she's able to access files on my computer, so I can't wrap my head around what could possibly be wrong in this situation.
Any suggestions?

Clarification Request
Is she connected direct to modem
Jun 27, 2015 7:19PM PDT

or running from an router assigned internal IP address? If she's on router, and it's not part of the modem, but there's a separate modem, hook to that, taking the router out of the loop. You could post the ipconfig readout and maybe that will help diagnose any problems.

My Mistake

Oh, sorry, I meant to say gateway, not router. There's no secondary device.
Either way, the ipconfig results are as follows:
IP address: 192.168.2.16
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.2.1

That looks quite fine.

Next step #1: system restore back to when it still worked correctly.
Next step #2: what happens if you make a new Windows account for her?
Next step #3: back to factory conditions
Next step #4: another router

Seems fine now

Well, it's been several days now since I followed your advice and did a system restore, and everything seems fine! I didn't think doing a restore would do anything to help (I thought it was the internet configurations or something more complicated) but, shows what I know haha
Thanks for the help! Happy

Here on TWC they are having issues. Maybe it's not your PC?
