Question

Vaio VGC-V2M dead after reinstall XP

Jan 18, 2014 7:57AM PST

Not sure what the problem is, I reinstalled XP and all of the vaio drivers and thought all was OK and turned the computer off.
When I tried to turn the computer back on a while later, nothing, completely dead, no sounds, no lights, no fans, no nothing.

Any advice how I can resurect this old thing?

Answer
Ideas.

Ideas short of new motherboard, etc.

1. Remove the battery, perform the usual GENERIC RESET noted in the CNET Laptop Troubleshooting forum welcome.
2. Remove the battery, any change?
3. Replace the CMOS battery.

XP machines are old. Expect lots of failures.

Not a laptop

The computer is a desktop. I have tried to remove the back, got quite a way but stumbled on the metal case covering all of the gubbins, I will try again though and see if I can find cmos battery.
It is odd becasue it was working before the reinstall.

So how long since the battery was replaced?

The usual cleaning is yearly to at most 2 years so is this a new unit to you?

Never been cleaned

As far as I am aware, the computer has never been cleaned internally and therefore the battery has ever been replaced.

Good to know.

There are many videos on Youtube about cleaning PCs and replacing CMOS batteries. This varies a little but I got canned air and a battery for under 10 bucks on amazon. Cheaper than a shop counter but stay inside your comfort zone.

These PCs do need the canned air and a battery from time to time.

New!

Thanks Bob.
After trying to access the back of the computer once more, which to me is impossible, I have removed the HD and ram etc and it is destined for the trash tomorrow.

I have now read that these vaios were not made with any kind of owner intervention planned for, certainly would think twice regarding them in the future. It had already been relegated to a spare laying around and taking up space, at least this has forced my hand to clear that valuable space.

Thanks to all for their help.

A personal request. Please try FREECYCLE.

I rarely have to send such to the trash. The RAM is not valuable in most cases so your choice what to do but FREECYCLE has been my way to keep more stuff out of the land fills.
