Death in a can...
Jun 12, 2006 5:53PM PDT

... that's what your parents kept from you Happy

From Nutritiondata.com's website:

Serving Size for one is 2 ounces (56 grams)
Calories: 174
Total Fat: 15g
Saturated Fat: 6g
Cholesterol: 39mg
Sodium 767mg
Total Carbs: 2g
Protein: 7g

And THAT, folks, is from a mere 2 ounces. Enjoy.

yumm, 75% phat
Jun 13, 2006 10:47AM PDT

oh boy, let me giggle those fatty numbers. Here are the fats, oops, I mean facts. There are 9 calories for every grams of fat so
9 * 15g fat
--------------- = 75% fat
174 calories

The recommended percentage of fat in your diet varies depending on who you listen to. I heard numbers from 11% to 30%. So anything over 30% must taste really good!

food for thought (ugh). we should watch what we eat or at least, close our eyes Happy

We have something similar to Spam
Jun 12, 2006 10:01PM PDT

It's called Viandada, and there's another product called Corned Beef (both made by Swift-Armour).
I don't know if Spam is the same thing, but Corned Beef is great if you fry it.

corned beef is a common "style" of meat

particularly on the east coast, and can be fresh. Spam is exclusively a canned phenomenon.

I think Spam (the canned meat) became popular after the end of WW-II. Spam was really about the only way you could send a canned ham by US Mail. It was not practical to send turkey at Christmas through the mail so you would send Spam instead.

After the war men would haul their green lunch pails off to work with a sandwich made by their wife in it containing Spam and cheese on rye bread. (This was the 'Donna Reed' days when few women worked.)

I even remember TV commercials (in black and white) showing women how to make an evening meal out of Spam.... that it wasn't just for lunch anymore.

Why the word 'spam' makes sense for unwanted email
Jun 13, 2006 1:12AM PDT

As Spam is 'canned ham'.

'Ham' is what you call an actor who is trying too hard to draw attention to him/herself. Unwanted comercial email is also trying (too hard) to draw attention to the product (or service) being offered.

'Canned' is what you call a movie that is ready for release. It is scripted and produced and ready for distribution.

So, a scripted email, ready for wide distribution, that calls excessive (and unwanted) attention to the product/service being offered is 'canned ham' or 'spam'.

now I know the meaning of spam...

but for the spam ham, anybody out there who never ate spam, I will tell you what...

DO NOT EVEN TRY TO EAT SPAM... IT'S DIRTIEST NASTY PEICE OF PROCESSED RAT MEAT YOU WILL EVER EAT...

however, you can feed it to hamster, I think.

Yes, this is the origin of spam
Jun 13, 2006 10:15AM PDT

I was not disputing the story of the origin of why it came to be called spam....

I was just explaining why the term fit the usage.

A slight difference.... the difference between 'how' and 'what'.

That story explains the 'how' of how the term came to be used.... but I think my ideas explain the almost subconcious reason(s) 'why' it stuck.
