Using Windows 7 Explorer

Nov 13, 2010 12:58AM PST

I've had an OEM Windows 7 Ultimate install for about a week. When using XP Pro, "Windows Explorer" was always the First program on my Task Bar... I do at least 80% of my work there, so needless to say I'm having a little bit of a problem adapting to Win7's version.

There are two things I've not been able to figure out...
How do I move a file UP one Directory? The only way I've found to accomplish this is to have two windows up at the same time.

Instead of WordPad, I used "Cetus WordPad" [it has a spell checker Happy ]. I associated it to the extension .cwd. It is a 32-bit program that needed to be installed in XP Mode > Virtual PC.

How do I make the configuration so when I Dbl-Click a ".cwd" file that has been copied (from XP) to the C: drive of my Windows 7 install, "Cetus" opens the document?

Note: I can Copy/Paste the 'Rich Text' in Cetus to WordPad that comes with Windows 7, but WP itself is unable to open a .cwd document & maintain the formatting.

Thank you for your time... pjdc3

Cetus Association
Nov 13, 2010 2:06AM PST

Thanks for replying, but my Post must not have been clear enough...
I would like to "Drag & Drop" a file into a folder above the sub-folder the file is presently in, while staying within One window, similar to using XP's Widows Explorer "Directory Tree".
i.e. C:/MINE/information.doc
I would like to D&D information.doc into C:

As for the association... that's what I was asking for help with... I am unable to find HOW to make the association to a program installed into XP Mode. Can you tell me what the physical address is? It would really help me (not only with this, but for other things as well). If I could find the address, I could use "Open with" to make the association.

Is Directory Structure Lacking?
Nov 13, 2010 5:08AM PST

Thanks again for getting back to me Bob, I appreciate the time...
I don't know if I've seen this exact page, but I've also read a few like it. After making the 'expanded tree' adjustment... the tree only expands one level deep on any partition. My example in my first reply is a little inaccurate, so... if the Address Bar reads: Computer > C: > MINE > Documents > Personal/information.doc - "Documents" does not show up in the tree. Like I asked in my original post... is there a way of moving a file UP One directory - and not need to use two windows?

Since Windows Explorer was so important to previous OS's, I find it very strange that Win7 is so lacking in directory navigation. It's why I was sure there was a way of doing it... I just didn't know how. So far the best answer I have is using a 3rd party program like "xplorer? Lite".

Could you tell me how I can address MS directly with this question?

Not Capable
Nov 13, 2010 7:21AM PST

That was good of you to take the trouble to host a screen shot for me, but even with a picture I wasn't able to follow what you mean about the "short cut". - The address bar doesn't match the directories you're showing... I thought "draw you a picture" was suppose to solve that kind of problem Happy.

This should be a simple Drag 'n Drop action. Being new to Win7k I thought it was something I just couldn't figure out how to do, but evidently it's not Capable of doing it.

You've been at this all day trying to help, & I appreciate it, but this needs to be put in the no fix column (for the time being).
Note - I'll submit a new post regarding the 'addressing the Virt PC'.

Thanks, and... MAKE a nice day... pjdc3

Odd.

I took a few minutes to show that I can setup Explorer to show the directory tree on the left and can D&D files and folders as you noted. I'm unsure how I could have showed this any clearer.

Again the only thing I did different was that I did not open explorer on "My Documents" on the desktop. That wouldn't work for reasons I didn't write about.

As to XP Mode I have that on this machine but couldn't find a ready example or an easy way to associate a file with an app in a Virtual PC. This is a dandy idea but have not seen anyone do that. And you're the first to ask about it.

Can be Done
Nov 13, 2010 8:40PM PST

It's a little inconvenient to do, but only because I'm not use to exploring Directories in this manner. I found that it doesn't matter if "Explorer" from the Task Bar, or "Computer" from the Start Menu (or Desktop) is used... If I expand the directories from within the Left Hand pane the Tree structure opens in a consecutive order. This will allow me to move/copy/etc. a file Up One directory, moving the file from the right, to the left hand pane.

Thanks for staying with it Bob, you can tell by my last post I was ready to give up, but it bothered me that I couldn't understand what you were trying to tell about "short cuts" & "My Documents", so I kept trying to duplicate it, & stumbled upon the answer. Happy

I started another thread asking the XP Mode address question - maybe someone out there has fond a way.

I apologize.

Sorry if I lost some step in showing that D&D as you asked seems to be available.

As to XP Mode, I'll look at that and if I can show it working I'll share a picture and try to add what I found. I think it can be done but XP Mode is a beast with many settings.
