Using ubuntu on a SATA hard drive

Jul 20, 2006 3:41AM PDT

I was planning on installing Ubuntu on my dell inspiron 1100. It doesn't have a SATA hard drive, but in a few months I was planning on getting a new laptop (probably an E1705 Dell) which does have a SATA HD. I was probably going to put linux on that laptop as well, and I wanted to get used to that distrobution of linux first on my 1100 first. But I heard that Ubuntu usually has problems with working on SATA HD's? Is that true? If there really is any problem, then are there any other distros that can support SATA HDs?

Using Ubuntu on a Sata hard drive

I have heard the same and did have problems dual-booting WinXP with earlier (non-Ubuntu) Linux distros. However, both WinXP and Ubuntu "Dapper Drake" work well separately on my two SATA drives on this machine, but Ubuntu can not access the WinXP drive files. There were similar problems with my now favorite Puppy Linux, but the latest 2.01 version has solved the problems.

What would happen if you dual booted both XP and Dapper?
Jul 20, 2006 10:24PM PDT

Is the SATA HD you're using for running Dapper relatively new or older? Some people say that the newer models don't run as well with Dapper Drake, because it has an older kernel. You also said you had problems when you dual booted Linux and XP? The reason is that I am planning on dual booting my laptop with both XP and Dapper, and I want to be made aware of any possible problems (Especially, because this is the first time I'm ever installing a Linux distro)

Triple-booting XP, Dapper, and Linux Puppy 2.01
Jul 21, 2006 10:25AM PDT

Hi Rohan,
I installed my Hitachi SATA drives c:a 20 months ago, i.e. they would be called "older". Dual-booting with XP/Dapper works fine, although I use WinXP only with older applications off line, favoring Linux Puppy 2.01 "multisession" (boot from, read from, write to same DVD), which does not install anything on to the HD(s). Am trying to "defenestrate" completely and stick to Dapper and Puppy in equal proportions

Thanks, I guess it won't hurt to try to dual boot

I guess I'll just dual boot both WinXP and Ubuntu and go from there. Any problems I can probably work out then.
