Using Samsung YP-U2J with Windows 98SE?

Jul 13, 2007 5:15PM PDT

So I just scored a YP-U2JZW/XAA on eBay for pretty cheap, and now I find out that Samsung expects everyone to have upgraded to Windows XP, because there are no drivers for 98SE!

Any ideas?

In the meantime I guess I'll go over to my friend's house tomorrow and use their computer, see if I can get the previous owner's terrible music off of there and my own good music on...

A little technical (sorry.)

Look up NUSB (an universal USB driver) on google.com and hope that helps.

Ummm... okay...
Jul 14, 2007 5:18AM PDT

Okay, I googled it...

It's apparently the brainchild of one Maximum Decim, and after reading this: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=43605 I'm not so sure I want to mess with it...

1.Remove ALL drivers USB flash drives.
2.Remove ALL drivers USB 2.0 controllers.
3.Remove ALL unknown devices.
4.Install NUSB 3.1 and reboot.
5.After detection new USB 2.0 controllers (if it will occur) too it is necessary to be reboot.
Remember! You install it at own risk!

The "install it at own risk!" is a bit spooky...

I don't want to have to do dangerous microsurgery on my operating system just so it'll recognize this device... Isn't there something simpler and less perilous?

No.

Sorry but it only sounds grim. Having done this many times I can't say it's that bad or dangerous but it's your choice to try or not.

Just giving you a choice.

hmm...
Jul 14, 2007 7:36AM PDT

Okay, I downloaded and installed the Unofficial Windows 98 Service Pack from http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html but no luck.

Guess I'll have to try that NUSB thing...

My concern is that my mouse and modem are both USB. If I delete the USB drivers, will the system recognize these devices when I reboot?

In my device manager I see

USB 2.0 ROOT HUB
USB ROOT HUB
USB ROOT HUB
USB ROOT HUB
VIA PCI TO USB ENHANCED HOST CONTROLLER
VIA TECH 3038 PCI TO USB UNIVERSAL HOST CONTROLLER
VIA TECH 3038 PCI TO USB UNIVERSAL HOST CONTROLLER
VIA TECH 3038 PCI TO USB UNIVERSAL HOST CONTROLLER

I don't understand why a couple of those things are in triplicate, but which of these do I remove? Just the USB 2.0 ROOT HUB? I already removed the entry for SAMSUNG YP-U2J.

I consider myself a fairly intelligent bear (I build tube powered guitar amplifiers and know quite a bit about audio engineering) but when it comes to the PC I'm basically a user who can do a few nuts and bolts type operations...

I appreciate your help, R.!

I never had to do that.
Jul 14, 2007 7:53AM PDT

I just installed NUSB and never uninstalled items ahead of time. I took the usual what I thought others would do and it seemed to work out fine.

I too wish it didn't look challenging.

no dice
Jul 14, 2007 8:34AM PDT

I installed NUSB and rebooted, no dice.
I removed USB 2.0 ROOT HUB and USB ROOT HUB, my mouse quit working, I rebooted, no dice.

Any ideas?

Then it's not to be.

Sorry NUSB didn't work for you. It's saved a few from moving to a better OS.

Does a Linux boot CD work with it?

Linux
Jul 14, 2007 10:48AM PDT

I downloaded Ubuntu last night but I think the file got corrupted during the download because when I burn the CD it shows up as the single .iso file. I downloaded Md5Sum and installed it but it won't run.

(Sigh.)

I'll try downloading Ubuntu again tonight, see if I have better luck...

Uhh... MD5SUM does not "install".

Something was lost in translation here.

haha, okay
Jul 14, 2007 12:34PM PDT

It's funny to me because the name of the file is "Install-winMd5Sum.exe"

Anyway, I couldn't tell that it did anything.

Linux, Part II
Jul 14, 2007 6:49PM PDT

Bob, I think I get where our disconnect is re: MD5SUM.

I downloaded Ubuntu, burned it onto a disc, checked it and all it showed was the .iso file.

So then I read on the Ubuntu site that I should checksum the file or whatever, using MD5SUM.

I downloaded Install-winMd5Sum.exe and installed it, and tried to run it but I couldn't tell that anything had happened. I'd send Ubuntu to Md5Sum for it to count the ones and zeroes and expected to see some sort of display pop up, but nada.

I figure the .iso file got corrupted en route, so I deleted it and I'll try again once my bandwidth throttle eases off (I'm on satellite (HughesNet(blech))).

Any idea why the NUSB didn't work on my machine?

Thanks again!

Sorry about NUSB
Jul 15, 2007 1:29AM PDT

It is my last hope for said machines.

But about that ISO. Some drop the .ISO onto a CD and when we look at their Linux CD we see this directory.

linix.iso 670,334 KB (date, time, etc.)

Oops, they didn't do a proper ISO write to the disk. Here's an article about this. http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/HowTo.htm

About MD5SUM. Sorry if it seems I gaffed that. A MD5SUM is just a set of numbers that we use to compare checksums for files. It is not an executable but in your case you told me MD5SUM and had some .exe in mind. Sorry about that.
