General discussion

using new mac as home pc with the ability to use as dvr

Apr 16, 2007 3:30PM PDT

I am contemplating the switch from pc to mac, I want to use the computer as a normal pc ie:quicken for bank reconciliation, taxes with turbo tax, and ultimately use as a dvr I don't see and video input available on any mac on the apple website. please convince me this is a good idea when I can purchase a media center pc with vista that has a video capture card and remote available for the same price as a 20 inch Imac. Is there a way to video capture with a mac and if so how is it done?

I use the eyetv by Elgato, it works just fine and wasn't too awfully expensive. I won't try and convince you though, the choice is yours. Check it out here:

I think that dissertation covered it but in case you missed it there is that issue of "you can do that on TV". That is the stampede to HDTV also has high barriers to blocking recording of HD content. There is a virtual pit of trouble in that area today and Apple would be smart to stay away for a little longer. Even your Media Center PCs don't fair well in HD land.

If you don't need HD then the options are a little better but I've taken to using a DVR and skip involving my PC.

I agree with the other two posters...

Just another option... presuming you are capturing analog TV... Basically, all you need is an analog/digital bridge. It is the same thing for converting analog video... Canopus makes good ones.
