Using logic in violent versus non-violent situations

Aug 17, 2017 6:09AM PDT

If someone is coming at you with a hammer, would it not be a help to pick up a larger hammer?
If someone is coming at you with a mouthful of hate, does it help to combat them with a bigger mouthful of hate?

Why do we use the same logic in either situation? It was written in the news that some counter-protesters went to Charlottesville because they wanted to end hate. If true, I'd say their choice of weapons was no better, if not worse, then what they went to fight against. Just my opinion.

I'm not a Bible reader
Aug 22, 2017 4:53AM PDT

but know many who are........but I do have proof every day that there is a God.

When my grandchildren walk through my fields and woods and don't get bit by a copperhead, when babies are born, when my (then) 16 yr old son takes the truck to visit friends in three feet of snow on mountain roads and headlights show up in the driveway because he's home safely, when my (then) two yr old opened a car door on a 75-mile an hour highway but held onto the partially rolled down window until I could slow the car down to safety on the shoulder, when I caved in a driver's side door off its hinges on an old man who pulled out in front of my truck and he lived with no injuries, when my vegetable garden gives me five years of canned food in my root cellar, when my 15 year old dog took on a cougar head on in my yard and the cougar blinked and took off.......and two years later after an onslaught on rolling seizures, they miraculously stopped when we pulled into the vet as she lay in my arms so I could put her down peacefully knowing she was loved for so many years.

I don't need a 'document' to make me believe.......

If you ask someone a question that can be answered yes/no, almost always it begs the further question. 'WHY do you say so?'
I gave you my answer. Now what? We're done with the topic? Back to statues, on which we all used more than 50 words? [Lee is shaking his head at that one!]
BTW, I know the phrase 'Bible thumper'; not a problem. But we do not thump, and you should know why, even from your brief contacts. Thumping requires the Bible to be closed. Ours were not, were they? Remember?
"Then that goes to one or more quotes from the bible to answer that event."

Did you hear of the 3 blind men and elephant?
Aug 22, 2017 10:29AM PDT

They were even allowed to touch an elephant and each gave a different description of it. Why? Because they were BLIND to the truth, they lacked the capacity to view it at all. You are blind to the truth, maybe God decided to blind you to it for some reason.

John 12

20And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast: 21The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and desired him, saying, Sir, we would see Jesus. 22Philip cometh and telleth Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Jesus. 23And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. 24Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. 25He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. 26If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

27Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour. 28Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. 29The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him. 30Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes. 31Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. 32And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. 33This he said, signifying what death he should die. 34The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man? 35Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. 36While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.

The Unbelief of the People

37But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him: 38That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? 39Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, 40He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. 41These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

Excellent, James, excellent!

Call him "blind" and then post an acre of Bible at him! Excellent!
The Bible translator Benjamin Wilson said of the KJV, "It has been convicted of containing over 20,000 errors."
I've seen only two, myself. One is a howler that doesn't affect the message's integrity. The other is more serious, but 'God raised up' Sir Isaac Newton to smite it hip and thigh.
Just so you know.

I chose not to quote the New World Order version used ONLY by JW's, and avoid the "bumper sticker" approach used by their door ********. Maybe that's why when they stop by and I read the actual Bible to them to point out error, they get up and leave.

Vulgarity
Aug 24, 2017 11:09AM PDT

Comes from Vulgur, seen in distant past as the Vulgate version of the Bible. It meant "in the common language" of that day, about 300 AD as I recall, so was in Latin. Vulgar means common language of the people.

James, you make it too easy.
Aug 27, 2017 12:37PM PDT

I'm up here in the 21st ... Sorry, the XXI cent. My dictionary, from 1969, shows that "vulgar" is indeed an old word, descended from this, that and the other thing. I wrote that the s/w deleted my word because ONE of its definitions* TODAY is 'tasteless, coarse'; it's a "vulgarity", thus fair game for purgative s/w.

*I can also note that this is probably the commonest use of it, although it came from a word with no derogatory meaning.

That's funny. It's play on its title, New World Translation, of course, into what's considered an evil phrase by conspiracy guys.
In fact, that's exactly what Jehovah purposes; a re-establishment of the original. You can read about it in your own, antique, Bible at Gen 1:28.
You can choose not to be there.

Thumpers
Aug 22, 2017 9:07AM PDT

It starts with some question about an event that's happening today.
Then that goes to one or more quotes from the bible to answer that event.
Then they want to give me a piece of literature to read in my spare time to justify their position.

No thanks.
Prove to me your god exist.
I'm not interested in someones belief.

My neighbor might believe cows jump over the moon and that's fine until they try to push that belief on me.

I've attempted to do that....but now I have to ask that you return the favor and prove He doesn't.....at least in your view. I'm not trying to convince you either way. I'm just curious why you believe WE need to convince YOU otherwise.

Prove
Aug 22, 2017 3:00PM PDT

If someone is going to answer a question with a link to someone/something it would be kind of nice to know if this someone/something exist.

It might be just wishful thinking.

To what link are you referring?
Aug 22, 2017 3:48PM PDT

I gave you my answer previously in this thread about why I personally have proof in my every day life that God exists. There was no link TO provide....other than the invisible but real threaded link from God to me.

Do you have proof that He doesn't exist?

Links
Aug 22, 2017 4:34PM PDT

Links or refs to scripture.
If you look through SE this happens often.
I did not say you posted a link.

You don't have any proof, what you have is wishful thinking.

Do I have proof?.....no.....that was easy.
Why can't religious types just say no instead of deflecting the question?

Just because mankind picks something out of the air and no one can prove it's false does not mean it's true.

...created to control the masses?
Aug 24, 2017 4:44AM PDT

I've not heard it said that way. That part of your statement is certainly bizarre. I have heard it said that the God was invented out of man's fear of death but never that it was someone or some group contriving to subjugate or exploit people. Can you tell us who, when and by what method this was done?

- Collapse -
Control
Aug 24, 2017 11:19AM PDT

It starts with people becoming restless and fearful because they did not understand things like drought, storms, floods.

So gods were created, god of the land, god of the sea, god of the air...etc.
People bought into it and they calmed down.

Then some smart folks came along and combined all the gods into one and religion was born.

Man made fiction.

- Collapse -
Bob, that's a common outline of religious history.
Aug 27, 2017 12:49PM PDT

I don't buy into it, but I see its appeal to you. If it's true then there's no God, and you can go on with the rest of your life.
Now, my God* left documents that show the whole process in detail - the details men left out of their history of God. In the event, my belief comes with accountability to that God. People find this restrictive or even frightening. I feel it gives me a better life than those who are accountable to humans. From your own statements we learn that my government is better than yours - I don't hold my nose when I participate in it. Happy
