i burned knopix from my friends computer, then put it in my cd rom and turned my computer on...its not reading it...its going to the screen where it says

start windows in safe mode
start winodes in safe mode with networking
last worked setting
normal mode etc..

none of the above works....if i choose any one it restarts and comes back to the same screen...

so how do i make my computer read teh knopix cd?

BIOS
May 28, 2005 9:02AM PDT

This problem usually occurs when the bios is not set to load the CD\DVD drive before the hard-drive.

To fix this:

(1) Start the computer, but continually tap the setup key (Usually [DEL]).

(2) Find the option to switch the boot order.

(3) Make sure that the CD\DVD drive loads before the hard-drive

try K3b from within Knoppix
May 28, 2005 10:49AM PDT

Hi "purewinners",
It sounds as though you went into your C (Win drive) from Knoppix and tried to start Nero from there. Instead, try to find K3b from within Knoppix. I have no recent experience with Knoppix but am using a similar Linux distro, MEPIS 3.3, which has K3b in a "multimedia" secion. I liked the "live CD" MEPIS so much that I installed it on to my hard drive.
Cheers

What do i do now?

thanks.

p.s. why wont it let me copy my important files from c drive to d drive so that it wont get erased when i reinstall windoes? if it allows me to transfer the file to d drive then i wont have to burn into a cd.

K3b
May 28, 2005 11:57AM PDT

Sorry "Purewinners",
I am of little help here, since I have not used Knoppix "live CD" for file rescue purposes. Presumably your d drive is the one where the live ("read only") CD is already "sitting". I assume that K3b could only work in that situation if you had two optical drives, i.e. one for the Knoppix CD, and a CD-R/RW. Short of installing a Linux distro on the hard drive, and rescue your files into the Linux partition, or check whether a USB "mass storage" device would work, I can't think of any other way.
Sincerely

That Last Idea
May 29, 2005 3:01PM PDT

I like that last idea. You should try putting the files on a USB device or something of that kind.

If not Knoppix, try SuSE 9.3. It has very good support for USB devices (so I'm told).

By the way; Can anyone vouch for SuSE 9.3 as a good distro?
