Question

Using LG UHD Smart TV with AUX?

May 30, 2016 9:21PM PDT

I just got an LG 4K UHD smart TV (model 55UH6150), and I can't get sound output to my Bose SoundTouch speaker. I use a left/right audio cable in the TV back panel, which connects with a single AUX-input into the speaker.

The TV has a sound output setting to use internal speakers only, connected device only, or mixed. I set it to mixed, and then to connected device only, and it doesn't output sound to the speaker in either option. This same setup works great with my previous Toshiba as well as a small Vizio I have in the bedroom, so I don't think it's the speaker nor the cable.

Any ideas on what to try?

I don't see any Left/Right audio output on that model

It would appear to be digital optical output only. The only red/white RCA jacks are input only from what I see online in the LG manual.

So in this sense you could need a converter. Some degree of trial and error will be involved since you are also going to a single analog input on your Bose speaker. Which soundtouch model do you have, btw? That might also make a difference.

I'm using the SoundTouch 30 speaker

... and I didn't even realize that the red/white slots are inputs. I thought they were outputs.

So the ONLY way to get audio out of that TV is via the optical outlet?! There's ONE way to connect speakers to it?

I read the manual too.

And didn't find any other audio outputs.

Yes- that's typical now

Most folks are simply sending along the digital audio signal from an HDTV back to their AV receiver and not some sort of wireless speaker rig like the soundtouch.

Whether or not your Bose will necessarily work via the 3.5mm mini-jack it has in back is part of the trial/error process. Cheap enough to try with a few parts you can source online @ Amazon, etc.
