Using Digital Camcorder as Webcam

CNET's review of Sony's PC 330 Digital Handycam indicates that it can be used as a Webcam. My question is, how? The documentation that came with this camera says nothing about this. Does one require some kind of special software? Note that I am connecting the computer to the camera via USB 2.0.

Thanks for any help,

K

I'll write this is a doubtful feature. Most camcorders will not run for hours without overheating and shutting down. This isn't a mistake in the design. Its because to make a camcorder to record for 24x7 operation the weight and cost increases. Consumers are not interested in such at the high volumes needed to drive the price down.

Your best bet is to get a cheap webcam. My bet is you need to read the manual and maybe hook it up to firewire.

Actually, I don't need for it to run for hours on end... we use our existing webcam for brief "telephone" type long-distance conversations. It would be nice if I could use this handycam as a webcam though, since we have 2 computers.

Firewire, huh? Are you sure it would not work with USB 2.0? ALso, what kind of software would you need?

The firewire seems to work with netmeeting. You need to try it and see. USB 2.0 is very new and as such your OS /application may or may not use such a video device.

Best of luck,

If you take out the tape it shouldn't heat up so much.

The tape deck is what usually breaks on a camcorder. You can probably get a cheap camcorder with a broken tape device from ebay. That's what I did! Now I have a great high-resolution webcam. I use DVdriver from

to make it work.

You need a Firewire card and cable that connects your camcorder to the PC. USB cable doesn't work..
