Question

Using an old router as AP over wireless

May 23, 2017 5:50PM PDT

Hi

I have decent wireless network all over the house. However in one of the rooms i have a few devices which do not support wifi and need ethernet connection. There are no ethernet ports in the wall.

I have an old wireless router which i was wondering if i could use as an access point over wifi without running the cat-5 cable all over the house. I am not sure if this is possible. Can somebody please help me out with any suitable guides if this is possible. I am not even sure what is this sort of a connection called to google it. All i am finding are router access point connections to increase wifi range, which i do not want.

Working router > connect old router wirelessly > connect to device with cat -5.

This is what i am looking at.

Many thanks in advance.

Answer
Varies with the router.

You could try a Powerline Bridge to get that Router as WAP working but time and time again I find folk attempt this with a modem+router device. I find this to be unsuportable.

As I can't find the make and model I can't comment further.

The router which is connected to internet is > Netgear JWNR2010 N300 Wireless Router

The old one is: Belkin N150

Thanks.

Not what i am looking for
May 23, 2017 9:37PM PDT

Hey thanks for the suggestion, but as i mentioned in my first post, i am not really looking to extend the range as it needs the secondary router to be connected to the primary one with a cat-5 cable. I cannot do this as i would be running a cable through the middle of the house.

I read somewhere that a bridge connection can be established between two routers but this belkin does not seem to support ww-drt firmware.

Then you have to clarify.

I noted powerline links, wireless extension and you have dismissed this and a wired link.

At this point I can't tell what you want. As to firmware, if you model doesn't do this then it's game over.
