Using a Modem with an Existing LAN

Jun 9, 2004 11:45PM PDT

We got this new software that requires the use of a modem. How do i install the modem with an existing LAN that provides the computer with its Internet. This software support people say the only way it will work is with a modem. How do i Set it up to look for the modem for its connections and everything else still use the IP address for the internet from the LAN. Im new so bear with me thanks. The LAN is apart of an Entire School Districts network.

Same here. Not sure what you mean. Formerly, with Dial-up, I had a line going from Winmodem plug(RJ11) to phone outlet. Now, with DSL, a line goes from the LAN
plug(RJ45) to the DSL Modem then to the phonee outlet. Pretty simple. chuck

''Hole'' in my hat maybe.

Off hand, since I use cable now and don't believe things are that complicated -- but could be wrong -- I simply left my external modem and stuff alone which makes use of it whenever necessary. Fax still works both sending and receiving if on.

Have you tried at all having a modem setup in the CP, Network module and etc. such as using it to access an ISP?

Agree.

Grif,

I have ADSL here via a router (connected to two computers in a LAN). If I phone in to my work from this computer using plain old telephone system and internal 56K modem, Internet Explorer magically picks up the 56K line, but my LAN still works. Hang-up the dial-up and IE picks up the ADSL.

I never wondered why it did so, but I consider it a nice feature. IE is configured to never dial a connection, and that's all.

Ask your support staff of the Schools Network if things don't work out.

Kees

PS "New software" requiring a dial-up connection must be "rather old software". Start looking for alternatives.
