using a macbook

What should I familiarize myself with first in switching to a Mac ? I have a Macbook / Leopard edition.

The Mac GUI is a little bit different.

I anticipate that this is a new MacBook and the OS is 10.6.x, the Snow Leopard version.

In that case you may want to download the user manual at http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Welcome_to_Snow_Leopard.pdf.

If you have used Windows you will have all the basic skills. The installation or removal of programs is much easier.

The keyboard shortcuts can be found in in the help files.

And you can always look through the help files for operating information. I recommend the help files, they are much better written, and much more informative than are Microsoft's help files.
