Using 5224 as a workaround

Apr 27, 2005 5:45AM PDT

Hi all,

Using the workaround to reply to posts past the 12 layers apparently breaks the software navigation so it doesn't render the pages correctly, and messes with message marking as well.

We may have to stick to the layer limits unless/until a fix is made.

That's what Lee seems to think.

You can get to the unread posts by using the Next Unread link, but the mini-tree doesn't change. And for me, the messages won't stay marked.

Plus that method's very slow on dialup.

I have a friend who has been using 5224 since that bad ol' Dan McC revealed it. I'll have to tell him to stop. Happy

Lee's not even talking to me in Feedback
Apr 27, 2005 8:31AM PDT

Guess I've been too vocal complaining about the great new software.......We keep going backwards in their technology strides instead of forward like the rest of net. Wish I knew what those guys were getting paid so I could outbid them for the job....I can't do any worse at least.

This POS software...
Apr 28, 2005 2:55AM PDT

...would have really been something in 1992 maybe. I remember all the things we were promised we would get when Jive was deployed. All the great troll control tools, etc. Didn't get a damn one of them, not a single freaking thing. Nothing. It was well over a year before even MESSAGE MARKING was implemented, lol. We're talking remedial pre-forums 101 here.

Now, with this recent update/regression, the "reply to post" buttons are no longer visible and the mini-tree is unreadable in this old version of Galeon I'm using right now, so I have to use the 5224 trick to post, every single time. This has nothing to do with the 12 layer limit, it's just another brand new bug.

There was a time when we tested software before a rollout in order to get rid of the major bugs. This software didn't have one minute of testing before rollout, hasn't had a single minute of testing for any revision since, and it most certainly shows.

I hardly complain about it in Test or anywhere anymore, it's no longer worth my time.

We're still nowhere NEAR the level of functionality we had with Twister.

5224

would probably still be working if some of our more "long-winded" members would understand that a 500 word header is not a viable option when utilising 5224...

It doesn't show up when you are reading
Apr 28, 2005 6:29AM PDT

posts.......it's only there on the main SE (and other) Forum threads list page.

I told Lee to either put it back on the top or at least have one in both places since some of us (me) read posts from the bottom of the list up and it's a pita to have to go to the bottom of the page to mark them now. They have duplicates for all the rest of the links (both top and bottom) and there doesn't seem to be a reason why that one got left off.

I'm being ignored.......

I finally figured that out

With all the repeats of info in the foums now I agree with you! It is so obvious that neither Lee nor the techs even read in SE and have any clue about the problems! And sounds to me like they DON'T want to be told eitherSad

Duh!!!!!

OK I found itSad If I hadn't been looking for it I would never have seen it in that BIG BOLD PRINT:))

AND if you have dialup, it takes even longer to get to bottom with the larger number of posts per screen! Law of Unintended Consequences indeed!
Thanks all.

I saw it right off the bat
Apr 28, 2005 7:37AM PDT

as it's about the most important link for me and was ticked off that it wasn't at the top anymore.....I immediately wrote to Lee in a private email and that email has been ignored as well as my posts in Feedback. I did get an email from him about the stupid filters for any link with the word 'free' in it and he said he was going to 'check into it'....that's the end of that discussion, too, I guess.

Evidently, the 'new' tech people don't care what people want or what is convenient....it didn't use to be that way. When Chris Faust was in charge of the software (before Philip), we were ALWAYS listened to in Test and it's mainly been since Feedback became more popular than Test that we found we could 'feedback' until the cows came home and it wouldn't matter. We get less to work with and told to get used to it.

Does anybody really give a frig about a smiley face (other than Glenda lol) when we used to be able to have graphic signatures, and individual Preferences, and we could actually SEE the damn font, and hyperlinks worked right, and so did html code? This sucks majorly.......
