Users can't Logon to Network

by Felix Akpan / November 22, 2004 2:15 AM PST

Gentlemen,

I have a serious IT problem. On Friday the 19th day of November 2004, I shut down all the computers on our Network only for me to return to work today (22/11/04) not being able to logon some people to the Network.

The naure of problem is this: The computer will boot normally and takes you to the point where it will request for your Password and Username. But if people type in the password, it will not open the Desktop for them to contunue their work. The screen will remain blank.

If I logon as Administrator, I will notice the same thing but if I unplug the Network cable before logging on, it will log me on sucessfully, then I will plug the Network cable again and people can work on the Network.

The problem now is, I can't continue to logon every body as Administrator, they have to logon as themselves with thier respective User names and Password.

Our IT Administrators seems to be out of ideas. Please can someone assist me out of this problem.

Regards.

Somewhere on the network is a server that Authenticates users. Look to see that it is up, connected, pingable, etc... Look for newtork segmentation.

As an Administrator try to remember what permissions were changed after the last successful logins.

Changes in roving profiles or policies can also cause similar symptoms.

What do the event viewers have to show? Look then go here http://www.eventid.net/search.asp and search for what the event ID means. (Hint, you can get a lot more event ID info if you go ahead and subscribe and the annual subscription is CHEAP!)

Felix,

A little better description of your LAN/WAN would help...Are all of your "network" computers on the same domain and in the same office area and do they connect to the network through the same switch/router?? Were there any power outages over the weekend? If that's the case, have you checked the domain's switch/router for power issues? That might explain why you can't get authenticated over the network unless you logon to your computer locally first.

Hope this helps and tell us more.

Grif

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
