User Interface Change for the BOL Lounge

Feb 21, 2006 2:45AM PST

We've all done it. It's happened just twice in the first few posts I've read today. Even Tom has done it.

Can the CNET Forum guys maybe either move the "Create New Discussion" button to the bottom or somewhere else away from the "Reply to This Message" button? Or perhaps have a warning window open that says "You are about to create a new thread, are you sure you want to do this?"

Yes we should be more careful but software, operating systems, websites, etc. should always be as intuitive to use as possible and if a mistake keeps popping up like this, it's time to look at the interface, not the users.

Thanks.

Agreed!

I was thinking along very similar lines. It seems the graphic artist that made the buttons was working to get them to look alike rather than being visually intuitive. I've done graphics for Web sites, and I'm guilty of the same outcome.

And check out Kevin S! Gets a BOL shirt and starts remaking the whole BOL experience. What will Molly say?

I think it would be good if when you are making a new post you had to preview it before it was submitted.

Nice to have you back, even in lurker form. Happy

I think the forumites err.. forumers... forumies?? just feel like more part of the BOL community when they see that their fearless leaders care enough to chime in once in a while.

Here here!

I would definitely recommend having an edit button on posts, so that someone could fix a mistake or remove a duplicate post. Granted, I've never accidentally clicked on the "Create new discussion" button by accident yet, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time before I do. Happy

Yes, edit button!
Feb 21, 2006 8:47AM PST

I agree. I looked for the edit button right after I posted the new thread by accident. Other forums I frequent have that, why not c-net? I'd rather have that than be forced to preview each post -- and with people like me, those with absent brain syndrome, posting, having to preview is not a guarantee that there won't be a mistake (of course, having the edit button won't keep mistakes away either but at least a user can fix them).

They've mentioned before...

...that they wanted to preserve the text in the original post so no changes could be made after-the-fact when others have already replied to it.

I understand that and yet, there are ways to safeguard against it and still allow us to make changes. I propose a window of opportunity: maybe 5 or ten minutes where you can still edit the post. Or maybe the window is open until such a time as somebody else replies to it.

The person who has made the decision to disallow edits is not considering that options exist to make the forum better for everybody. They simply need consider them.

I never even thought about that Kevin.
Feb 21, 2006 2:36PM PST

But that would make sense about people editing their posts to preserve the original text.

Perhaps allowing a user to edit their post within 5 minutes or so of posting it would work then.

Is it possible?
Feb 21, 2006 3:14PM PST

To even allow such a thing? I have honestly never saw a time limit on post editing on any forum I've been on. BUT, it would be a cool feature to have.

Programming
Feb 21, 2006 6:05PM PST

Surely CNET has a programmer on hire there SOMEWHERE. I can't imagine it would be all that difficult with a little bit of code. But what do I know? Happy

.. What about a feature to have signatures? I'm not talking about those signatures on other forums, where people have pictures, links, and all that other bandwidth-wasting stuff, but for me, I'd just like to be able to have my name in it. Save me some time typing it in.
