Used optimizer, cannot open / unassociate .cmd

Jul 7, 2010 3:22PM PDT

I recently installed Advanced System Optimizer and found it really good. The problem is that I think I accidently made it open all Windows NT command scripts in notepad.

I cannot execute the file type, just open it in Notepad(Windows NT command script=.cmd, right?)

I tried going into tools and look for the file associations, but couldn't find .cmd. In the Advanced System Optimiser I cannot find the option to switch it back.

I am running Windows XP Media Center edition SP3, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you open shortcuts and exe files? Check out the link below.

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/disablecmd.htm

If you can't open shortcuts and/or exe files download the LNK,EXE and COM File Association Fixes at the link below which also has instructions for running them.

Almost, but not quite....

I can open .EXE and CMD.exe no problem.

I tried your other link, and now my .Bat files open correctly, but my Windows NT Command script file just opens up in notepad.
Any way I can execute it somehow? or just stop it from opening in notepad? Theres no "Open with..." when I right-click the file neither ...

Just curious.

What do you mean by a Windows NT Command script file?

You say .bat files now open correctly, and you can open cmd.exe, so I am unsure what is now failing?

You say there is no "Open with" on the right click context menu. Are you sure this Optimiser hasn't disabled that?

Fixed it...

There is no perfect windows optimizers/maintenance software, and this one is no exception... I had to recover a backup, just before it made the changes to my system. Apparently it set the option to "Always open .cmd and .bat files with notepad".
But now it's all fixed. The files execute accordingly Grin.
Thanks for your help

Glad you got it sorted.

And this is why we tend to shy away from such 'optimisers'. We are never quite sure what damage they can do.

Strange though that this one had an option to associate .cmd and .bat with notepad though. I have to wonder why.

Security reasons...

It had "tips" to have better security in my pc. Since some cmd/batch files can contain viruses, it would be safer to open these files in notepad, instead of executing them...
Technically, it's right. But in my case, I needed it executed.

Since I have an antivirus already, I'll stay away from the security section in the optimizer Happy
