Question

Use Seagate external drive as primary place for all photos?

Aug 20, 2011 11:24PM PDT

I currently use a Seagate 2TB Free Agent GoFlex external drive as my ongoing automated back-up drive. It is always connected to my computer. Can I add a second identical Seagate external drive to be used as the primary location for my photos (i.e., without using the automated back-up feature)? (I plan to move the photos from my computer to this new external drive in order to free up space on my internal drive and improve computer operating performance.) Will my current Seagate drive that I use to back-up my computer also back up the photos that I now store on the second Seagate external drive?

- You can have multiple external disks connected, so that won't be a problem.
- It should be possible to just use that disk as storage by not activating the backup functions. If it fails all regular ways, just reformat it to remove all the special software that's on it.
- It gets a drive letter. Probably that drive won't be automatically included in the list of drives that is included in the automatic backup to your first drive. So either you'll have to add it, or do a manual backup.
- Removing files from a hard disk doesn't make for better performance at all. It just frees disc space. So the whole operation only makes sense if you run out of space on your internal disk.

Thank you for your reply. It sounds like I should buy a drive that does not include the back-up software. Wouldn't it be cheaper and has CNET published recommendations for these types of external drives?

Also, I was advised that my computer was slowing down because i now only had about 20% free space on my computer's 150GB internal hard drive. If that is not slowing it down, how can I determine what is slowing down the computer? (Please note that my anti-virus software (McAfee Total Protection) is up-to-date.)
