Use Firefox as Definate Default

Jul 13, 2005 10:24AM PDT

I use Firefox as my default browser, but everytime I open anything Microsoft it opens in IE. ex. when I open MSN Messenger and click the mail tab, it opens in IE, how can I make it so it opens in Firefox instead?

Set as default?
Jul 13, 2005 10:37AM PDT

Did you set Firefox as your default browser, or do you just use it as your primary browser? If you didn't set it as default, open Firefox and go tools->options and click "check now" under "default browser." Then say yes to making it your default browser.

If it is already set as your default browser, there are several possibilities. First, make sure you have the latest version of Firefox (1.0.5 was released yesterday), as the bug may have been fixed. Also, with a few of my programs (most notibly Konfabulator, a widget program), I had to reinstall them after I installed Firefox in order to get them to recognize it as my default browser. You may have to do this here unless someone else knows of a way around it.

Hope this helps,
John

Set as a Defalt!?
Jul 13, 2005 1:31PM PDT

John, I copied your reply. Set up as a word doc., so when I have downloaded a non-corrupted version of Firefox, hopefully, will install this program and try it out.
Nice post by you and Kees Baker. I will bring up your post and read it before setting up Firefox for a defalt.
How long have you been using Firefox? What so you think of the Thunderbird support? I tried Thunderbird email out once to view it.
By the way, Kees Baker is a great contributor to the Newbees Forum and others. Nice to have support from you both. Not Modorators, just great help!

Do you think that the bug in Firefox prevented me from downloading a non-corrupted version today?
Went on their site today and the store is closed, as well as obtaining a CD version of Firefox.
John, should I hold off from obtaining Firefox until the bug is fixed and a new CD released? Your thougts?

Thanks,

Kevin

Firefox thoughts...
Jul 13, 2005 3:42PM PDT

Hey Kevin,

My internet was down for almost 6 hours (a record low, believe it or not!), so I just posted a response to your issue concerning a corrupt download.

I've been using Firefox as my default browser since last November, but started using it a month or two before that. However, I've never tried Thunderbird. All of my e-mail accounts are web-based, and I use Trillian to notify me when ever I receive new mail...I receive a mini notification of which account and from whom, then the option of viewing it. At the same time, I am curious about it, so I'm going to be trying it out sometime in the next week. (Currently reinstalling my PDA software and still checking out Ubuntu (a free Linux OS).

Thanks for the compliment! I've had some time off lately, so I've had a chance to be more active...something I really enjoy doing.

The bugs that were fixed concerned 12 security flaws (including 2 critical and 4 high risk), as well as a few minor bugs. The download utility wasn't one of them, and I haven't heard of any reports, so I doubt that was the cause of the corrupted downloads you experienced. However, the download should be working now.

Finally, I'd just go ahead and download the software now instead of waiting to purchase a CD, which includes the same software. Considering the size of the download, and the fact that v1.1 (a sizable release) will be released in a month or two, I just don't see the point in getting it on CD. However, it's always nice to support a great open-source project which has helped show Microsoft the light (at least to some degree).

Hope this helps,
John
