Use Blackberry unit as cell phone only?

by groucho1062 / August 16, 2006 2:17 AM PDT

Our daughter will be studying overseas next year, and we're looking into buying her a cell phone (and we understand that we need to get her a plan separately; she'd be renting a SIM & the plan from her school).
We've seen recommendations that we get a quad band, unlocked GSM phone. Our search for that spec turns up some Blackberries. We have no interest in using the additional Blackberry features, such as email, etc. - we want this for cell phone service only.
If we put an active SIM card in the Blackberry, but don't sign up for any additional Blackberry services, will this meet our needs?
Thanks very much.

Many Blackberries available on Ebay
by groucho1062 / August 17, 2006 1:23 AM PDT

I should have made that clear. There seems to be some pretty good deals to be had on Blackberries on Ebay.

So - can I use the Blackberry as a phone without enabling other Blackberry features?
