USB2 External hard drive transfer speed

Apr 5, 2005 3:45AM PDT

All,

I hooked up an external USB drive to my linux machine today, using kernel 2.4.29, and modprobed usb-storage. I'm able to transfer files to/from the drive just fine, but only at 14mb/sec per `hdparm -t /dev/sda1`. Is this normal for an external hard drive, or does this seem a bit slow? Now, this is a remarkable improvement from the USB 1 transfer rates that were in the 800kb/sec range, but is there room for improvement? I know that one could use hdparm to tweak some of the settings, but I was curious if I'm already squeezing out as much speed as I can.

Thanks,
Dan
