I use the older Belkin unit but with our disposal of the old 2000/XP machines the drivers didn't keep up. For that reason I use one from serialio.com if nothing else but for the drivers.
Be sure to test your adapter on other machines since these can fail. One of out systems uses 16 Belkins and every year I think we lose one or two.
Good luck in your search.
I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 running Window XP Pro w/service pack 3. I recently purchased a Dynex USB-to-Serial adapter because my laptop only has USB ports (4). Before installing the drivers, I went out on the web and discovered that the adapter is made by another company named, Prolific. I went to there website and downloaded and installed the latest drivers for the adapter. So far so good.
I plan on using the adapter for testing & configuring different serial devices for a SPC application. The first and most common one is a simple scale. I connected the adapter to the scale & my laptop, configuted the COMM port to the right port settings and bang I was reading the scale print out into Hyper Terminal and then the SPC package I am test. I played with it for a couple of hours with no issues.
The next day, I stated my laptop went to connec the serial adapter back in to perform some more testing and I received the following message. USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognized it. I went through all the hoops. uninstall & reinstall the drivers, shutdown & start the laptop about a zillion times. I always received the same message when I connected the adapter.
I went out over the forums and read all kinds of things people did and I tried some of them to no avail.
I'm fired and looking for some assistance. Please...
