USB random shut off

Nov 15, 2010 7:59AM PST

I have a Toshiba satellite c655-s5049. The 2 USBs on the side of the computer randomly stop working. I can restart the computer and they start up fine, yet a few minutes later they go out again. I have gone into Device Manager and made sure all the USB Root Hubs are set so that they wont be turned off to save power. I cannot find anything else to explain why they would do this or how I can stop them from doing this again.

Do you mean

Do you mean when devices are connected to these ports? If so, what devices?

You mention saving power and that could be a clue. Does this happen only when the laptop is running off the battery, or does it also happen when it is running off the mains?

Does it keep working if you don't plug in the cooling pad?

Tell a little more story.

If this came with Windows 7, is some upgrade and if anyone installed the motherboard drivers, latest BIOS from Toshiba.

More story please.

Similar problem
Oct 25, 2011 9:45AM PDT

I have the same model laptop and am experiencing similar problems. I have tried plugging in my iPod touch, external HD, and mouse, but nothing happens. Usually I can restart the computer a few times and then the devices are recognized, but now nothing seems to work.

Time to move forward and look for malware. Grif writes more...

Update
Nov 2, 2011 3:51PM PDT

I got rid of a lot of malware. My ports are working better. My external HD and mouse are being recognized, but if I have one of those plugged in and then plug in my iPod, the ports stop working.

That with preinstalled operating systems and only restore media that repair of the OS is limited. At this point it may be time to backup your stuff again and restore the machine to it's factory condition.
