on a small circuit board to which these ports are attached or it could be a bad/shorted connector from there to the MB header. You could try unplugging the header connector and try another such as sometimes are used to add additional rear ports. If the same happens, your problem is in the MB...maybe the southbridge. If so, you can't fix that.
the front two USB ports on my desktop are not working right. When I plug something into them, the system freezes and I have to turn the power off. This not happen to the two USB ports on the rear of the desktop.
What is wrong? How can I fix it?
