usb port problems

Jun 28, 2004 5:28PM PDT

My USB ports have stopped working. I have read thru various questions and tried the collective inputs that were suggested. All things (device mngr, diagnostics, etc.)say my hub root and controllers are fine, but when I try to use the items, I get a communication error stating that there is a USB problem. I have uninstalled/ reinstalled the devices and changed cables/ports to no avail. these items were working fine aweek ago and are still working fine when hooked up to another computer. help.....

What operating system are you using? If you are using ME (with which this is a common problem, of course with ME what isn't a common problem) your best solution is to install a different OS. To fully answer your question, more info is needed, such as OS, what is the exact message you are getting, and what are the devices?

Your post lacks what OS, what machine, and if you are aware that Microsoft doesn't supply the needed drivers for said USB on most motherboards. Microsoft will also not check that your BIOS is set proper or is current.

Try its suggestion of a PCI USB card.

Cheaper than a new motherboard.

Me too! I have Windows ME and the USB ports seem to be causing a lot of problems. But my real question is this : why all of a sudden did this start happening ?The PC worked just fine when I bought it. The hardware doesn't seem to be bad(for all I know) . I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled the original files .But the problems are worse than ever. Does WindowsME have a built in time bomb that explodes after a set period of time, requiring you to buy Windows XP ?

Unexplained USB issues.

I'm getting a VIBE that AOL or Windows Update is at the heart of this issue or USB ports are just dying.

Let's be clear that NO ONE should accept DRIVERS from Microsoft or Windows Update. Also AOL doesn't give the enduser a choice on downloads and may offline people by accident.

I thought that a windows update could be the culprit . I erased my hard drive and reloaded all my original software . I figured that any updates would have also been erased .Yet the problem continued . Also, I don't currently have AOL . I'm suspecting that Windows ME has a resident virus deliberately planted by the manufacturer and set to "go off" after a period of time. I hope I'm not becoming paranoid.

Microsoft will not install motherboard drivers. If you had revealed what make/model PC or specifically what CHIPSET you have, then I may have come out that you needed or didn't need some USB motherboard driver package.

Again, all this and more is over at http://www.usbman.com

My USB ports have also stopped working occasionally. My keyboard and mouse are hooked up to my USB ports and everyonce and awhile they'll turn off for about 10 seconds or until I reconnect them. Please help me with this problem. Happy

Siddy,

Your post neglects to mention you used the information in this discussion. Some will jump into a discussion and not read it.

Sorry man Happy You see I'm only 14 so I don't know to much about computers, but, earlier you mentioned a PCI USB card or something like that. Is that a whole new USB port? If it isn't then is there a way I can get a whole new USB port without getting a new computer?

You seem to not have read this discussion or the supplied link to USBMAN. As such, what good will it do if I repeat that content?

No offense please, sometimes people need a little push to use the content in the discussion.
