USB PC Card Problems

by tonyfurr / February 12, 2006 9:51 PM PST

I purchased a dual USB PC card for my Gateway Solo Laptop to be able to have the speed of USB 2. My laptop has 2 USB ports but they are USB 1. It is an older laptop.I am running Windows XP Professional. My problem is when I insert the card the PC locks up and makes a continuious beeping sound. When I eject the card the computer returns to normal, with the message "New hardware found" and another, "there was a problem with the new hardware". The PC card has a conection for a switching power adapter (5vdc 1a), but the instructions say nothing about using it. Could this be the problem?

Since XP Pro didn't do USB 2.0 that could be it.

See if SP1 or SP2 can be installed.

Also, many are blissfully unaware that motherboard drivers may be required. Check with Gateway since Microsoft will not do this for you.

XP and USB2

RP all I had to do was switch to the adaptec card and all problems were solved. XP recognised it and installed it as a PNP. Don't know about the other cards and I am am using XP Pro with all the current updates but SP2 should have installed driver support for 2.0.
Be well,

About drivers... Microsoft ranks poorly there.

The one thing I constantly find is that Microsoft does not supply current drivers.

SP1 added USB 2.0 support (and some drivers), SP2 seems to improve USB 2.0 workings but drivers are best from the maker of the PC.

USB 2.0 card

I had the same sort of situation and started out with an ADS card. Same result, locked up everything tighter than ****'s hatband. I finally replaced it with an Adaptec AUA-1422 which gave me mini firewire, regular firwire, and two usb 2.0 ports. I love it, I can take my external HD which uses either Firewire or usb2 from my laptop to my other machines and get much faster sustained transfers than usb2 and also connect it to my machine that only has
usb2. My HP printer is also USB2. Nary a hiccup so far but the card for my notebook ran me around 60 us and included a 4pin to 5pin firewire cable.
Hope I helped

I forgot to mention that even though self powered devices connected via the pcmia card should not need the power supply for the card as I understand it WinXP won't see it on my Sony Vaio GRX600P unless the PS is connected.
