USB not being recognized correctly

Dec 1, 2003 12:36PM PST

Not sure if This is an XP problem or my HP Pavilion 7935 is hosed. I'm on my 3rd brand new HP printer this one a PSC 2175 all in one. All three have done the same thing. Following the instructions to the letter it recognizes a new device but then the computer shuts down and reboots over and over and over. I've tried uninstalling the software so many times and believe I've eliminated any conflicts from my old printer and scanner. I don't see the device in the device manager under USB ports. The only other device on a usb cable is my Canon camera and it works fine. HP has offered little if no help at all. Thanks

Have you tried the usb port you know is working?

Just to rule out a possible non-working port. Also, are you sure the cable is seated firmly into the device? I recently made that mistake myself with a new usb scanner- it wasn't recognized until I gave the cord a firm shove into the scanner. Hope it's as simple as that for you.

1. Is it set, "Automatically restart the computer?

2. The article [Q308427] states that an event is any significant occurrence in the system or in a program that requires users to be notified or an entry be added to one of three logs. The Event Log Service records application, security, and system events in Event Viewer. With the event logs in Event Viewer, users can obtain information about hardware, software, and system components, and monitor security events on a local or remote computer. Event logs can help identify and diagnose the source of current system problems, or help predict potential system problems.

3. The article [Q307973] suggest that a user configure the action that Windows should take when a severe error (also called a fatal system error, or Stop error) occur.

http://www.usbman.com is worthwhile research. I've found any number of issues from BIOS, motherboard drivers to outright bad implementations of USB ports in which you can't use an onboard port but get to add some USB PCI card.

Then we have any number of issues with XP and what shape the OS is in. Sometimes I have to pull the user's hard disk out, pop in a temp drive, install a quick install of XP, motherboard, video and audio drivers, then SP1, more patches and then the item that we need to see work or not. It's not a pretty picture to find that such usually works fine. And at hourly charges, repairing XP could employ everyone I know of for many years. So the usual is to start over with a good install. If you can determine what it is, that's great.
