USB in Car?

by volvogirl / July 2, 2016 9:05 AM PDT

Didn't know where to post this. This forum seems as good as any. I have Toyota Tacoma Truck with 1 USB port. Can I get a splitter cable or use a usb hub to add a second usb cable? Will it charge 2 things? The cell phone connects with Bluetooth but is plugged in to charge. Then we have an iPod I plug in to charge and to play though the truck speakers. Just tried playing it plugged in. It was great. Had good controls on the truck display, even better than using the iPod directly. Much better than bringing the extra bluetooth speaker and taking up a cup holder space.

I'd try it. Why?

Part of the USB spec handles overcurrent and shorts so I'd try the splitter.

USB adapter on cigarette lighter is better

You should be able to use the splitter, but very likely the charging current will also be split into half and making the charging slow, or even not chargeable (depends on the output current of your USB port).

You might want to get a two or three port USB adapter to plug-in on your cigarette lighter, which should give you the flexibility to charge multiple devices while keeping the charging speed.
