USB External Hard Drive problem

Apr 1, 2007 5:43AM PDT

I have been using a WDC external hard drive for several years on a WIN XP SP2 Dell notebook system. Today when I plugged it into a USB port, I got a message "New hardware found - RC15". When I try to install it, I get a message, "Driver not found". I have not found anything meaningful on this problem anywhere. One suggestion was to delete the Windows/inf/infcache.1 file and let Windows recreate it. That did not help. I'm hoping someone here can help me access this very important external hard drive.

My first test is...

To try it on another machine. Why I do this is to sort out if it's the machine or the USB drive.

What I do next depends on that test.

Problem solved

If anyone else ever has this problem, here is what I did...

The USB port was proved OK by plugging in another external hard drive. Then I installed a new hard drive in the external case. It yielded the same RC15 error code. My conclusion is the USB electronics in the case are failed. I have ordered a new external drive kit. Many thanks.
