USB, External Hard Drive, and DVD Drive won't read anymore

by funnyjeffrey / February 20, 2008 2:11 AM PST

Hi Everyone. So I was trying to install a not-so-legal version of Topdesk, and once it was installed I went to minimize all my windows with it's windows minimizing function, but i had turned off the animation and when I did that, I got a stop error. I didn't write down the stop error. After I rebooted, there were several things wrong:

1)I can't access my USB thumb drive or my external hard drive. Both of these still work on my roommate's computer, but when I try to access them through "my computer", I get prompted to reformat. I tried reformatting my thumb drive, but the format failed. If anything, I would love to be able to access my external hard drive so I can back up my music and then I can just reformat. If anyone can help me find a way to do this, this is the first and foremost thing that I would like to see happen.

2) Of the 8 or so programs that I have starting when windows boots, half of them load immediately and the other half, including my internet/network programs, load about two minutes after the others. While they load, it takes forever for my computer to open any other program or window.

3) My virus program (Trend Micro Pc-Cillin) won't start at all. When I try to start it, I get some sort of error that promptly opens and disappears before I can read it.

4)Windows update won't work anymore. I went into "services.msc" and found that a bunch of programs were inactive and proceeded to turn on all of them, but to no avail. I got windows update to allow me to see updates, but once it downloaded them, it failed to install them.

If anyone could help me, that would be so amazing. Thank you!

You'll want to repost...

This forum receives little traffic except for the specific Question of the Week threads so you'd be best served by reposting your request in the Computer Help forum. Before doing so, though, you may want to try:
1.) Performing a System Restore.
2.) Booting into Safe Mode and attempting a virus scan.
3.) Performing an online virus scan using Fousecall.

These are the consequences of using illegally downloaded software, but if you're willing to ditch the pirated product we'll try to help you get back to where you were.

Good luck.

Just do a reformat of your computer. Then install a legit copy of the OS again. Use Zonealarm and a antivirus program to scan the "freeware ;)" the next time you want to test software from the internet.
PS make sure you encrypt the Music collection if it is from the internet.
Your problem is not the USB drives and external HD, it is just your computer is infected. So reformat, install and enjoy.
