USB drive in WD external hard drive fell in machine

Dec 2, 2010 8:14AM PST

Urgent! I have a major project (not to mention a lot of irreplaceable data) on my WD external HD and I can't connect it to my computer.

WD USB MyBook
1 TB (I believe)
looks like: http://www.tvtoyz.com/images/wd_hard_drive.jpg

it has a DCIN port
and a mini USB port

it fell from a desktop onto the carpet, a light fall, there is no indication of internal/disk damage, no exterior damage but the USB port was temperamental

i tried to mount to two different computers but it wouldn't show up.
i jiggled the USB connection and then the port fell into the case of the hard drive and i can't get it out.

solutions please, i'm desperate!
is there a way to open up the case? to reattach the port?
can i take the disk inside and put it inside another external HD?
should i take it to geek squad?
anything?

thanks!

PS. i know i shouldn't rely on saving everything to one hard drive. i have backups of all the footage but the edited project is on this drive

Try another USB enclosure?

Try it INSIDE A DESKTOP PC?

And if the data is dear and can't be replaced, geek squad is not where I'd go. Try http://www.drivesavers.com

I am having the same problem with my external hard drive. It is a 1TB and like yours took a light fall off of a desk. How did you solve this problem?
