USB devices causing system freeze

Aug 22, 2010 3:11PM PDT

Help!! have spent days trying to resolve problems with USB ports, am running XP SP3 on an Intel Celeron mobo 1.80 Ghz with 1.24 RAM installed. Have tried most of suggestions from other posts, uninstalled USB ports, checked "hidden devices", uninstalled Adobe Photoshop Album, disabled Hub energy saving in Windows. Allto no avail....even my computer technician is stumped. There are 4 USB ports (2 front, 2 back) each port is self-powered (?) at 500m/A. There is power in the ports, but as soon as you insert a usb device, i.e clickfree back-up drive, flash drive, camera, on any of the ports the system comes to a standstill, no pointer, mouse function, key function etc. if I restart, I get the mouse and everything else going, but comp. gets really slowed down, and still won't run/recognize inserted devices (doesn't show up in MY Computer as any drive whatsoever!!! I have run out of ideas...any else have this occur and if yes what on earth is the solution. At wits end.

Hi - I have an idea, but first tell us when it started. Is it a new phenomenon, and can you pinpoint the day or event when it started. Have you looked at event viewer?

Tried This Yet?

1. Visit the Intel site and download, then install the latest chipset driver for your motherboard/chipset. You may need to borrow/use a PS2 mouse and keyboard to perform this step.

2. Check to see that you haven't disabled/enabled "Legacy support" in the BIOS.. Browse the BIOS for an item called ?Legacy Support?, then disable/turn it off. (Or in your case, maybe it needs to be turned ON.) then save your changes - reboot. This is a fix for many usb devices especially printers which contain on-board computers.

Hope this helps.

Hello - I bow to Grif's superior knowledge, but first - if your printer is USB-connected, disconnect it, keep it disconnected for the next phase of the process and possibly this may be the culprit. It happens often with HP printers, but others may have the same illness too. Good luck - Amos

Hi Grif,
Sorry to keep you hanging, needed to be away to welcome newest family member.
I did update my mobo driver, as to Legacy Support in Bios, couldn't find any category containing that item. I have Award BIOS installed, the mobo is 81845GVM-RZ with Intel 845GV chipset. Is this unusual? Where might Legacy Support reside?
In the meantime, we got one of the front USB ports working/recognizing my daughter's fancy camera (she used the FIX-IT utility from Microsoft.
My tech installed a USB card, which is playing nice with my backup device. Still want to know what the problem is/was with the rest of the USB ports. What else could I try?
Thanks for your help.

On One Computer Here Using An Intel Board...

...the "Legacy Support" item is listed under the "Advanced" tab, then "USB Configuration" in the BIOS settings.. Unfortunately, not all are the same and not all BIOS displays have the ability to enable/disable "Legacy Support".

Hope this helps.
