USB device not recognized

Jan 2, 2011 8:05AM PST

I got a 2 Gb PNY flash drive to use soley for my son's pictures. When I first plugged it in to my HP a6120n Vista machine with 4 Gb internal memory, "USB device not recognized...has malfunctioned..."
I took it back and got another one. Same thing.
Any clues as to what is happening?

Try the USB ports on the rear of the machine.

Thanks again Bob,

It worked once on another machine on one of the front ports, but not again. I can use any other usb device on either of the front ports of this machine, except this. It does produce a usb sound and prompt the computer to give this error reply. And it does work on a back port - at least this once, although it's an incredible hassle to get at it. Why would it work here and not in the front port?

I don't know.

I apologize for that but while I know what it is, I am never sure if that is what it is for this machine.

My fix is to find some USB 2.0 extension cable (keep it to 1 to 3 foot) and use that instead.
