usb communication issue

by blacks4 / April 11, 2006 7:43 AM PDT

recently purchased maxtor 3100 personal storage drive. install manual said win xp would detect device and automatically install the drivers for it. Well i got an error message saying that the device is unknown. i searched maxtor's knowledge base and emailed them a question about it. they said it is a communication issue between the device and the usb host controller chipset. Ofcourse their advice was to purchase a USB cardbus adapter card or anyother model of hard drive. Is there any other way around this without buying the adapter or another drive?

did the HD have a cd because most likely it needs a driver from the disc.

i won the item off of ebay. the description said it was used, but in fine working order. i don't necessarily think it's defective. The install manual i downloaded from manufacturer's site said no drivers needed for winXP.

Is that USB 1.1?

If so, pack it up and return the drive. It may not work and if it did, the speed will annoy you.
