USB CF flash reader installation problem

May 16, 2005 11:44AM PDT

WinXp SP2, 512 Meg, 1.7 Mhz Celeron, Fic VC-11 Mobo

I am having trouble getting WinXP to install an Enermax ECR-11 USB1.1 C/F Flash reader. When I plug the unit into a USB Port, the system recognizes the presence of a "USB Storage Device". However, when the system searches for the driver to install, it opens a hardware wizard and returns an error message that it "..Cannot Install this Hardware.." since it cannot find the neccesary software.
I know the reader itself is good since it is immediately recognized and installs automatically on another WinXP system with no problem at all.
The USB port is OK since other USB devices install and operate perfectly on the same port.
I searched the driver files on the "working" computer and found the driver files that installed for the device on the working system. These files are also present on the "Non-working" system but for some reason, they do not get installed to the device.
The files are as follows:
Under USB Mass Storage Device - USBSTOR.sys;
Under Generic Volume - VOLSNAP.sys;
Under Generic Storage Device USB Device - DISK.sys; and PartMgr.sys

I also attempted to install a known working SanDisk ImageMate Model SDDR-75 with the same result.

Curiously a 256 MB Lexar Jump drive does operate correctly on this port.

The problem seems to be in the inability of the OS to properly get the drivers installed for the device.

I will appreciate any advise on how to resolve this issue.

Thanks,

Jim

Did you look in device manager?

I believe you should have USB to CF class driver and USB to media reader port driver. If not there then it should be reinstall.

USB CF flash reader installation problem

Thanks for your reply.

I have looked in Device Manager amd the C/F reader is listed under ''Other Devices'' as ''USB Storage Device'' with the proverbial Yellow Question Mark.
I have made many attempts to reinstall but aways with the same result as I originally described. The OS does not seem able to find and install the correct drivers.

One thing...

What about motherboard drivers? I know that XP will not get the ones for the FIC boards automagically so you have to visit it's web site for such.

Hi Bob:

Thanks for responding.

All the USB Ports are active in Device Manager and seem to operate correctly for other USB devices.
Would the Motherboard require special USB Drivers to activate the C/F reader?

Again, this is an area that wipes some out. Here's why.

It does not matter other USB items work. If this device works in other machines, then it is still possible for it to require the latest motherboard drivers and ... other items to still work.

Don't pass up on this easy issue.

As to if this will fix it or not, I can't tell. The industry is full of standards. Pick one?

Thanks for the tip!

I'll download the latest Mobo drivers and reinstall.

BTW - this is a system that I upgraded from Win Me to XP Pro. I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not.

I'll let you know the outcome of the driver installation.

Thanks,

Jim

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your insights. I completely reinstalled the motherboard drivers with no success in resolving the USB device problem.

I did, however find a file "USBSTOR.inf" on the system. I extracted the file and forcibly installed the C/F reader using this file. It worked but insisted the file was not Microsoft signed. I installed anyway and now at least the reader is working.

It seems to me that something is not correct since the process should have gone automatically but at least I got it working.

Thanks,

Jim

Actually, this is par for Windows.

MANY drivers do not have the signature needed to automatically install.

Best of continued luck,

Bob

I had the same problem and I wanted to thank you for the help. I found the usbstor.inf file in the I386 folder on this new Dell Dimension 3000. It was off the root of the C: drive. Not where I expected to find it.

Thank you guys
