If you had any Symantec software on this machine. That error and story is consistent with Norton Antivirus scanning removable media. While that might be it, I offer no support for NAV. That's something I leave to Symantec.

Symantec's NAV. I have no cure and have to leave you to ask Symantec for the cure.

You seem to have found that NAV settings will matter.

Same problem, only no Norton
Apr 29, 2005 5:09PM PDT

I've been searching all night for an answer to this question. I recently purchased a new HP Pavilion a1034n and when I tried installing my Maxtor 3100 usb drive it immediately says "USB Device Not Recognized" and in device manager is simply lists it as an "unknown device". I've tried uninstalling everything listed in the USB section and rebooting and that didn't work. After 2 hours of tech support with HP I had uninstalled USB in the registry, checked BIOS settings, pretty much anything you can think of and still got nothing. The one thing that did give a different result was when I renamed the removable media drives (9 in 1 reader built into the machine) to W, X, Y, & Z then the computer recognized the Maxtor as a Mass Storage Drive and when I went into Device manager it showed it with the yellow exclamation mark next to it..I thought maybe this had fixed it until i uninstalled that and rebooted. When it came back to the desktop..it detected an "unknown device" and i was back to square 1. When I boot the computer into the BIOS it recognizes that the Maxtor is attached because it lists it in the HDD Priority Group under Advanced. The tech support person is supposed to research the problem and get back in touch with me but I thought if I could find anyone else that has the same issue I could maybe find a fix. By the way the drive works perfect on my old desktop running XP Pro and my laptop running XP Home. I've tried it in all of the USB ports on my new computer, each gives the same result. I am not running Norton on the PC. It did come with a trial version of Norton but I did not activate it and uninstalled everything to do with Norton/Symantec. I run Mcafee, however when I was installing the drive I hadn't installed any type of security software. From what I can gather from posts on the net, when a problem such as this occurs it seems to point to a problem with USB 1.1 and 2.0 drivers. The drive is a 2.0 as is the cable..the computer is supposed to have all 2.0 drives, I mean it was manufactured only a couple of months ago and its got SP2 on it. All of my windows updates are up to date. If ANYONE has any ideas about this..please let me know. Thanks so much!

In my first reply I noted norton.

And you waited this long to write you don't have it.

Why?

I am not the original person who posted, but same problem

I'm sorry, I guess you misunderstood, I only joined the forum last night because I am having the same problem that the original poster is having. I am a different person, I think that the original poster said that he DOES have norton, however I don't have any type of norton software running. I hope this clears things up. Sorry for the misunderstanding, if you could give me any info that you might have about my problem, please let me know. Thanks!

You don't have the same setup.

I can't guess so do try to make a fresh post about your setup.

Best of luck,

Re: USB External HDD installation.
Apr 30, 2005 4:24AM PDT

I just installed a Western Digital 80GB External Hard Drive (USB 2.0 or 1.1) yesterday afternoon in my WinXP desktop with no problems.

Whenever I install a program, game, or some new hardware like the external HDD, I do the following as it could make a difference:

Get off the internet.
Temp disable the:

Firewall (my free ZA)

Anti-Virus ( My Norton's Anti-Virus... as Bob indicates Norton's as well as other programs have been known to cause problems on installations.)

The Microsoft Anti-Spyware, and other spyware like AdAware & Spybot.

Other programs that may be running at start up are temp disable by my little "Enditall #1" program.

OK, now on the installation, the instructions on this WD HD is to first insert the CD that came with it and run the installation program (wizard). Then attach the power cable (w/transformer) to the HDD, then the power plug into the 110V supply. Next connect the USB 2.0 cable to the unit then to the PC USB port. Now turn on the HD by pressing the external HD power button. A hard drive icon will appear in the "My Computer"....mine happened to be a new drive "F".

All done, so reboot the computer to reinstall everything you temporarily disabled.

I also go through the routine of temporarily disabling like above when playing high tech games offline (I don't play online) to avoid possible interference that may cause slight problem.

USB Device Not Recognized.. Maxtor 3100
Apr 30, 2005 6:09PM PDT

Ok I'll try posting this here instead of inside that other thread, I think I was confusing you or something. Below is my setup..I had already posted it but apparently it was confusing, I hope maybe you can understand it now.

Also I have since talked with the 2nd level tech support person at HP and after updating the BIOS and running a scan of windows critical files to make sure they were all intact, we still accomplished nothing. If anyone has any idea about this..please let me know. Thanks!

A few things.
Apr 30, 2005 9:40PM PDT

You deserve your own new post and not tagged into some longish post.

Anyhow.

1. Does the drive work in another machine?

If not, it's dead, Jim.

2. If it works in another machine, then other software can still interfere. I noted one but the list continues. I can't guess what you loaded. You could have some CDRW as a disk drive software and that interferes. Again this is not the only suspect.

3. http://groups-beta.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&num=20&q=%22Maxtor+3100%22&safe=off&qt_s=Search shows you are not alone in this issue, but one person noted a CODE 10 in some device manager. You didn't note that.

Again, the lack of information about any virtual drives or other software and that I can't possibly list all of them by name leaves this as a possible issue. Also the most common gaffe is the HIDDEN DRIVE LETTER setting in TWEAKUI. Some will exclaim they didn't use TWEAKUI, but it's not funny when I have to run it anyway and check/uncheck the box and the drive shows up. The feedback is always they didn't try it since they don't use TWEAKUI. I wonder if you can try this?

Order of Operation
Apr 30, 2005 11:24PM PDT

Just in case....An earlier post a few lines up suggested that the order of operation during install will make a difference. It sometimes can, depending in what you are doing. XP does things a little different.

Just in case you didn't do it right the first time, unplug everything, uninstall the software that came with the drive, and POWER DOWN completely. Reboot, check Device manager to make sure you are clean, then follow the instructions that came with the drive. Anyway, it sounds like a Maxtor problem, not an HP problem.

Sometimes...if you just try to "plug and play" the new device before installing the software first, the results are similar to your description.

Good luck.

Same Problem As You (but i think i fixed it!!)
May 24, 2005 2:39PM PDT

i've been pulling hair for the last 2 days since i've been "using" the Maxtor 3100. it worked for a second (long enough to transfer 40 gigs over onto it) and then it just blanked out . . . "not recognized" and "unknown usb device" etc . . . well, after scouring the forums on the web, i pieced some things together and did this (and it's a pain! but . . .): i UNINSTALLED ALL OF MY USB DEVICES AND THEIR RESPECTIVE SOFTWARE AND DRIVERS!!!! then i first reinstalled my creative nomad software and drivers (because i can't live without that) and then i plugged my MAXTOR 3100 into a USB slot that had not been able to recognize it previously DOZENS of times!! and now, lo and behold, i am transferring my WET DENTIST and SPOKES music videos (the bands that i'm in) back onto my E drive!!! YEAH! hope this grueling process helps anyone else that's been sweating over this. piece out!

update: that didn't totally fix it at all
May 25, 2005 3:18AM PDT

after i rebooted (once the important video files were transferred) the Maxtor 3100 was once again an unrecognized USB device. so this morning, i called tech support . . . turns out my INTEL USB ports do not communicate with the 3100. the tech guy instructed me to install a PCI USB port (which i had laying around) and voila! now it works
